McLaren withdraws from Proteas

Ryan McLaren has withdrawn from the South African squad due to Kent’s refusal to release him from his contract.

McLaren was chosen for the ODI unit for the first time, and requested that Kent let him our of his contract agreement. However, the county stood their ground and denied the request.

“We fully appreciate and understand Ryan’s request to be released by Kent to play for South Africa,” said
Kent CEO Paul Millman. “But we are not in a position to agree to his request for numerous reasons: the main one is that Ryan is a key player and Kent has built the team around him.”

McLaren said in a statement that he regretted having to pull out of the ODIs against Bangladesh and Kenya.

“I am obviously disappointed that I had to withdraw from the South African squad. But I fully understand my contractual obligations to Kent and respect their decision. I also want to thank Cricket South Africa and the national selectors for having the confidence in me to choose me for the country. I wish them well for the season and especially the Australian tour,” he said.

McLaren will play for the Eagles in the MTN 45-over championships this summer.

I must say I agree with them. Mclaren shouldn’t have had a reason to leave. He also made a mistake with the long contract but he should’ve been assured that he has a future with CSA.
