Warriors down shocking Sharks

Worcester overcame the Sale Sharks  17-9 in a kicking fest at Edgeley Park.

The Premiership returned after a six-week break but this game failed to inspire. Warriors flank Netani Talei scored the only try of the match, but otherwise flyhalves Matthew Jones and Charlie Hodgson traded penalties.

It is Sale’s sixth defeat in their last seven and rugby director Philippe Saint-Andre was bitter at the showing. To add to this, England hopeful Matthew Tait also pulled up with a hamstring injury.

“Worcester deserved to win and this was one of Sale Sharks’ worst performances since I’ve been involved in the club,” said Saint-Andre.

“I take a lot of responsibility for this and I’m very, very concerned.

“It’s the first time in my coaching career of 11 years that I’ve lost four home games in succession.”

The extent of the injury Tait is also unknown, adding further worries for Saint-Andre.

“Tait’s hamstring went tight and because he had pulled it before we didn’t want to take any risks and so brought him off,” he said.

“We don’t know how serious it is.”

Sale – Penalties: Charlie Hodgson (3)

Worcester: Netani Talei. Penalties: Matthew Jones (4).
