England drop down rankings
17 Nov 2008
England have dropped out of the top four of the IRB world rankings ahead of their clash with the Springboks.
The Poms went down 28-14 to Australia on Saturday and this could be crucial in their bid to be among the top seeds ahead of the 2011 World Cup draw. Argentina take over at four after their win over Italy and if the Pumas beat Ireland this weekend, coupled with a Bok victory over England, it will cement their spot.
With the draw for the 2011 World Cup imminent, the Tests over the next couple of weekends will ensure extra incentive for teams to climb up the world rankings.
The seedings for the World Cup in New Zealand will be gauged on the rankings released on 1 December.
IRB World Rankings:
1 New Zealand 92.41 rating points
2 South Africa 88.45
3 Australia 86.70
4 Argentina 82.82
5 England 82.11
6 France 80.13
7 Wales 79.58
8 Ireland 77.18
9 Scotland 76.76
10 Fiji 75.24

How’s the WC seeding going to work? Is it 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 or 1,2,3,4,8,7,6,5?
In other words, if the top four teams goes into a pool each, where does the 5th team go? Pool A or D?

#9 Possie: Isn’t it a draw?
i.e. one tier 1 team (1-4) per pool, one tier 2 team (5-8) per pool, one tier 3 team (9-12) per pool and one qualifier per pool.
As it’s a draw, anything can happen. SA can get drawn with England (again
) or France, or with the lesser lights, Wales or Ireland.

Dear BigTwit and Stefan Jewns. Even the French think that Barnes is a plonker.
All Blacks coach Graham Henry’s silence over Wayne Barnes’ World Cup refereeing has paid off – he has won the prestigious World Fair Play trophy for his “exemplary attitude” following last year’s shock quarter-final loss to France.
As Henry gets set to return to Cardiff, the scene of his darkest hour, the International Committee for Fair Play (ICPF) has awarded the New Zealander their highest distinction, the prestigious Pierre de Coubertin trophy.
It is the same award All Blacks great Tana Umaga won in 2003 when he went to help unconscious Welsh loose forward Colin Charvis while the test match went on around them in Hamilton.

#12 wooden spoon: Didn’t even consider the draw option. But only the first 8 teams on the World rankings are certain of a spot. The rest have to play a series of matches to get a spot, and those spots are pre-allocated (I think).
