Save our Bok

Save our Bok

In the December issue of SA Rugby magazine, we give the practical solution to the Springbok and Protea – and no it wasn’t rocket science, just 10 seconds of logic.

There is place for both the Bok emblem and the King Protea on the national rugby jersey, with the Bok emblem on the left and over the heart, and the Protea on the right. Soccer has it this way with SAFA’s two soccer ball logo on the left. What we don’t understand is why SARU has not done this ages ago.

Jean de Villiers is the South Africa player of the year, at least according to us, and Ryan Vrede chats to him about thriving on greater responsibility.

Martin Gillingham, based in the UK, reckons the Heineken Cup is better than the Super 14, while Gavin Rich wants a restructured Currie Cup in which less is more. Columnist Jake White writes the Currie Cup remains a perfect breeding ground for new talent, New Zealand’s Marc Hinton says SARU dropped the ball in not wanting an expanded six-team Super 14 play-off and Keo writes that Ruan Pienaar simply has to play all his rugby at flyhalf if he is being groomed to be the answer for the 2011 World Cup.

SA Rugby’s team of Jon Cardinelli, Grant Ball, Andrew Worling and Ryan Vrede looks at the five flops of the Currie Cup and there’s a celebration of the Sharks’ winning domestic season. We also catch up with Dan van Zyl, who is coaching in Ireland, give you an extract from Monty’s biography, get the low down from Peter Grant on his international omission and profile Sergio Parisse, the man Nick Mallett believes is the best No 8 in the world rugby at the moment.

Talking of flyhalves, Jon Cardinelli probes Naas Botha and Joel Stransky about the Bok flyhalf situation and there’s loads of top prizes to be won. All at just R23.95!

    Keo,

I while ago I posted what I believe in my opinion would speed up rugby development. Did you ever read the post? I would like your opinion on the matter.

Also some food for thought, Sarugby recently launched a campaign to recruit more refs. For two week now I have phoned Sarugby, left messages and phone again, and still no reply. Are they serious or is my surname Erasmus not in line with transformation.

Nice try boys but that was suggested years ago and your 10 seconds of logic is merely intellectual property theft. This is a political issue and the Bok will stay. The reason why it will stay is very simple. If you take it away the Watsons, Komphela’s and Stofile’s of this world will lose an expedient political football.
They would never allow the Bok to be abolished, they will agree to a compromise and then a year or two later they will start Bok bashing again. These politicians getting rid of the Bok is akin to banks getting rid of bank charges, it ain’t gonna happen.

Some wil say “Save our Bok”…. and some will say “Shave our Bok”

Ek like nogal die idee dat die Bok op die linkerkant bly, so reg oor die hart !

That jersey looks good. Why have they not done it like that ages ago and stop all the goings on about our Bok. I think though they are going to put it on the right and the protea on the left.

#5 grootblousmile: I would also like the Bok to be over our heart. But think that sarfu has agreed to put it on the right and the protea on the left? Why soccer has the protea on the right?

The use of the word ‘our’, which also happens to be as bold as the word ‘Bok’ on your cover is quite controversial indeed! Your team obviously spent even less time coming up with that!

Greatness isn’t measured in time … but if you really wanted to know, that took about 2 seconds because it was a no-brainer (OUR)

Ah but what will our little friend down south do if/when the Bok is still there – despite the addition of a King Protea…Wish you luck as we wave you goodbye…dam de dum…

IMO the solution is even simpler than that.

Take the King Protea and the Springbok, comine them and you have…

    …King Bok. Fixed. Done. Sorted.

Liverpool suppoerter… huh, looked like they were walking alone when they got stuffed 4-2 against Spurs. Man Utd for life

Considering your readership/ target market, I suppose ‘our’ confirms their ownership of the team/ symbol – in these times of financial woes, YOU seem to be using every trick in the bok…err book to sell more magazines!

Just a thought, what if they do drop the Bok (If you will pardon the pun) and that bloke still does not get selected, would that constitute anti transformation tactics or good rugby sense, just asking!!

  • 21.Mutant: Reply to this comment

Or just a fresh Spring Protea

#3 roddis: I don’t think this is the best time to become a referee. With all the different sets of rules you’ll have to do three times as much studying (OK I was a lazy student).

Soccer? You want to put the SPRINGBOKS in the same group as Bafana Bafana?

  • 24.SpringbokSarah: Reply to this comment

While I would be happy with that, the politicians won’t be. They’ll agree to that and then slowly they’ll swap it around and then they’ll just kick the Bok off and we’ll be the stinking Proteas. I’m telling you know we will be the Proteas before the next world cup. But I’m not going down with out a fight!

  • 25.SpringbokSarah: Reply to this comment

    But here’s my logic.

Forget the flipping Protea. It’s already on the emblem anyways. Or is that a daisy?

  • 26.Craig Goosen: Reply to this comment

For me thats the logical choice, leave thbe Bok where it is, and put the King Protea on the other side, like in the SA Rugby mag. But if it were the other way round [Which SA Rugby and the politicians are talking about], I do not support that at all.

    SAVE OUR SPRINGBOK !!!!!!

Los die bok. Die springbok het tog immers ‘n wit streep, bruin vel en swart poephol.

2008/12/01 Springbok day. Bring out the oldest green jersey you have and wear it, or cap, or shirt, showing the springbok. To all the Springbok supporters throughout the world. Make a visual protest and stand up for the springbok emblem.

I have the perect answer to the bok/protea question. Rename the Springbok the Proteabok, that way those who want to support the boks can still do, and those who want the protea are also happy. its a no lose situation plus the emblem does not have to change or shift right or left or anything. Good luck for the politcal gurus to find fault it that one as I am sure 90 % of the people complaining about the bok does not even know what the emblem looks like.

  • 31.leanair: Reply to this comment

should read “perfect answer” not sure what perect means but it sure sounds stimulating.

Really enjoy the new edition…especially the article about the Sharks by Ryan- hope you are right and we get to see another few trophies sitting in the Sharks cabinet in future!
Also really liked the cover by Rory- was very catchy and something different :-) nice work guys!

Ryan..your article on Jean was amazing- awesome story which just highlighted the fact that he really is the best player in the world. Such a humble person with such talent is a rare find- SA Rugby should hold onto him for as long as they can!
Hope to see him as our new captain in the near future!

Great issue as usual but please can this be the last we hear of Luke Watson. I am sick and tired of this fool getting underserved column space in such a great magazine! Let his name be forgotten by SA Rugby forever!
