Ireland beat Argentina 17-3 in an ill-tempered game at Croke Park on Saturday.
Irish flyhalf Ronan O’Gara kicked 12 points in total but the Irish had to wait until the last 15 minutes to finally break the back of a stubborn Argentinian defence.
There was little running rugby in this game, sealed by Tommy Bowe’s late try.
The match was full of tension and both sides were guilty as tempers flared from as early as the eighth minute. Argentina mainly resorted to tackling, and the Irish were sucked into the defensive mindset – despite the steady steam of possession they had.
The Argentinian strategy for most of the match consisted of kicking, especially up-and-unders, and Irish flyhalf Ronan O’Gara duly played along with with some some poor decision-making.
An example of this was O’Gara missing two drops goals until he finally managed a third attempt.
O’Gara redeemed himself when his cross-field kick was collected by Bowe who scored to put the result beyond doubt.
