London – On the eve of the Test against England at Twickenham on Saturday, Peter de Villiers still had some time to reflect on a challenging first year as the coach of the Springboks.

Speaking at an official function with more than 50 Springbok supporters on the Vodacom Greatest Supporters Tour, De Villiers admitted it hadn’t all been “plain sailing”.

“I’ve been through some deep waters, but you can either look at the glass half full or half empty. I’m the kind of optimist that will look at it half full,” said De Villiers.

“Even if there are only two people who are supporting the team, those are two more than nothing. The one thing we lose as people is that whenever you come up against somebody who is against you, you think the whole world is against you. But you don’t realise who is following you and who shares the same sentiments as you. When you have players like I have, the management team and family back home, and even supporters such as this, then everything becomes worthwhile.”

#4 wooden spoon: That sounds good but the Oct - Nov tours can the NH come down here where the sun shines then? Then again its just far to hot to play rugga down here unless we play the games around 6pm. That would work. We really do have to have a global season it would be much better for all the rugby players.

One of the issues I have with European rugby is that we see these competitions with no explanation of what they are, who is eligible and how they fit together. From TV down under it is just a bunch of random games

#3 Big Hit: Interesting that Australian football has moved away from the club structure at top level and now Fifa has given them an ultimatum to go back to it or risk being moved back out of Asian tournaments. FIFA know that these franchise structures can never build up the same type of presence and history as a club structure. When Super this becomes Super that and we redraw the boundaries what does it mean. Super12 and 14 are basically the same but Super10 was something else .... who knows what will happen in the future.

#5 Big Hit: A colleague told me that a similar effect was experienced by rugby league in the UK recently. Not the biggest crowds historically, but when the playing season was changed to summer, the crowds increased substantially. The same would happen in the UK if rugby union was played in the summer, imo. In any event, these days rugby is almost a year long season!

#4 wooden spoon: for a global season you would need summer rugby in the NH. The stick in the mud RFU would never agree to it and for NZ/Aus rugby its probably for the best because I think if rugby was played in summer it would becomemore popular with the result that the money to offer SH players huge wages would be available.

May – July: S14/ Heneiken Cup/EDF
August – Sept: 3N/6N
Oct – Nov: International tours

Keep it simple and the best players are available for both club and country all the time.

#2 wooden spoon: the european rugby season has been based very much on the football/soccer model. In the same way that football has england internationals, champions league matches and premiership matches in the same month rugby has AIs, Heineken Cup and GP matches on at the same time. Its doesn't appear very well organised but does provide variety, one week its heineken cup pool clashes then next week its Eng/SA then its Bath/Leicester etc.
