Evans’s Lions dream over

South African-born Wales lock Ian Evans has been ruled out of rugby for up to nine months, ruling him out of the British & Irish Lions tour.

Evans injured his knee in the 29-9 loss to the All Blacks and his earliest possible return date is the end of May – effectively ruling the 24-year-old Johannesburg-born boy out of a return to South Africa as he wouldn’t have enough time to prove his form.

Wales manager Alan Philips confirmed the damage done to the ligament.

“There is cruciate damage and we are looking at an operation in the next couple of weeks, and then between six and nine months [out] after that,” said Phillips.

“It is quite a blow for us. He was starting to play well, so it is very disappointing for him.”
