Boks tops in Dubai doozie

The Springbok Sevens side edged England 19-12 to win the first leg of the series in Dubai.

A Robert Ebersohn try ensured South Africa went to an early lead and a further score by Mpho Mbioyozo took the advantage to 12-0 at half-time. England had few opportunities and were well marshalled by the Bok defenders.

Tom Biggs hit back straight after the break to give England a sniff. The momentum shifted and when Paul Delport was yellow carded the Boks looked in trouble.

Mickey Young crossed for an English try and the conversion saw the scores tied at 12-12. But Gio Aplon made a late break and was under the crossbar before passing to Ryno Benjamin. Fortunately Benjamin held on and the title was secured.

In the other divisions Samoa beat Kenya 12-7 to win the Plate, while Portugal thumped France 40-0 to win the Bowl. USA took the Shield honours by beating Arabian Gulf 31-7.

Great stuff. Lot’s of work to do though. How fast is Aplon? Can’t be much slower than the likes of Nokwe and Habana…

  • 61.RedBull : Reply to this comment

It seems that Ryno and Aplon have found their calling – 7′s is their job now. And Delport what is up with him? Is he going to replace Bolla?

It is actually a rugby site hosted in SA and mainly focused on South Africa. You will find that South Africa are not the only side in the IRB sevens which is what this thread is about.

If this site was just a South African site then there would be tips on how to push someone down the stairs

Well done to our Boys. Fantastic performance with some real heart and fire. The difference this year to last was our defense and scrums looking a lot more solid.

Robbie Ebersohn – wys vir die mense hoekom jy meer awards as enigiemand anders by die SA Rugby Player of the Year gekry het.

I am so glad Ebersohn is playing Sevens and not S14. It is the best thing for his rugby – and SA will reap the rewards of this move in years to come.
