Wasps finally get a win
29 Nov 2008
Wasps won only their second premiership game of the season when they overcame Newcastle 23-17.
Six penalties from flyhalf Dave Walder as well as a try from replacement prop Charlie Beech with two minutes to go secured the victory.
Beech came on for former SA U21 tighthead Pat Barnard, who was worryingly stretchered off the field after a long delay. However, it was reported from the hospital that Barnard could move his arms and legs as it was earlier feared serious.
Boss Ian McGeechan is hoping this will turn around what has been a dismal season. “A win is everything, we produced some very good forward play which is why the penalties came,” he said.
“It’s been very difficult playing without 12 or 13 men [away on international duty or injured] and we can now press on when we get our England boys back next week.”
Meanwhile, Derick Hougaard and Heyneke Meyer’s Leicester stumbled at Sale, going down 27-13. Meyer lamented a poor first half showing, which had the visitors down 17-3 at the break. “We always had to chase the game, because we weren’t smart enough in the first half,” said Meyer.
“In the second half we played most of the rugby. But when you don’t take your chances and can’t defend turnovers you’re always going to be chasing the game.
“We expect to win every single game that we play. We’re playing much better rugby at the moment – but ultimately it is what is on the scoreboard that counts.”
