Brilliant Boks break drought
6 Dec 2008
The Springboks won the George Sevens for the first time ever when they downed New Zealand 12-7 at a packed Outeniqua Park.
The Boks also broke the drought by winning back-to-back tournaments after Dubai last week and fittingly captain Mzwandile Stick crashed over for the crucial score. Before that Gio Aplon was adjudged to have knocked the ball over the line after a cross-kick, but from the scrum the Boks forced a tighthead and Stick did the rest.
DJ Forbe’s opened the scoring for the Kiwis, but a try late in the opening half by Renfred Deyzel brought the hosts back at 5-7. Stick then scored with three minutes to go and added the conversion.
“It’s awesome to win here, we’ve struggled in the past in George due to the pressure,” said Stick. ”The support from the crowd was amazing and this was a very special one – our blood is green.”
Springboks - Tries: Renfred Deyzel, Mzwandile Stick. Conversion: Stick.
The Boks reached the final via a convincing 21-7 win over Fiji.
The hosts dominated possession in the opening half and three tries was the result – to Ryno Benjamin (2) and Mpho Mbiyozo who barged over.
The Fijians scored a consolation score with a minute to go but the result was beyond doubt.
Springboks - Tries: Mpho Mbiyozo, Ryno Benjamin (2). Conversions: Stick (3).
Meanwhile in the qaurters, Man of the Tournament Robert Ebersohn was instrumental in the Boks’ 17-12 victory over England.
Ebersohn scored the first try and set up the extra couple of scores. Ebersohn’s offload inbetween two tacklers inside his own 22 was instrumental in the second score, while his 40m break set up captain Mzwandile Stick for the try that sealed the win.
The Boks led 19-5 and a late try from the English was mere consolation.
Springboks - Tries: Robert Ebersohn, Ryno Benjamin, Mzwandile Stick. Conversion: Stick.

#646 AB: Your farm near Pilgrims Rest? Damn that is one of the most beautiful parts of our country. Enjoy it. The weather over December must be really hot there. Or is it a little cooler than the Kruger Park being a little higer up?
7 Dec 2008, 20:30 pm
#648 carol: Its a beautiful place here in SA Carol. Very near the beautiful Kruger game park.
7 Dec 2008, 20:30 pm
#648 carol: Pilgrims Rest is a well known tourist attraction, it was a gold mining town in the “Gold Rush” in the 1800s.
7 Dec 2008, 20:32 pm
#644 AB: Sorry just had to get my point across there, would be glad to put a stop this ridiculous arguing
7 Dec 2008, 20:33 pm
#650 Puma: At the foot of Robbers Pass, get flippen hot there, but we have a few mountain pools and the odd airconditioner should it be required. Only bad thing is internet is very slow there, only GPRS signals! But I suppose thats part of the magic.
7 Dec 2008, 20:34 pm
#638 wooden spoon: Really so how old is Stick then? Was just thinking yesterday would be great if we had Stick playing for the Sharks!
7 Dec 2008, 20:36 pm
#647 grootblousmile: I had better get Googling.
How is the tourist industry in South Africa at present? It sounds such a wonderful place, but we “outsiders” all think we will be in grave danger if we wander about like we do in so many other countries. I like to hire a car and drive about, is that OK in most areas?
7 Dec 2008, 20:36 pm
#653 JayDaFiveOh: No probs bud, I think Stick is one of the most exciting players I have seen in 7s for a long time.
7 Dec 2008, 20:37 pm
#655 JayDaFiveOh: I think I heard the commentators say that Stick is 24… he’s not a fly half though in the 15-man game but a wing !
7 Dec 2008, 20:37 pm
#651 Puma: Kruger, Pilgrims Rest the list of “must see’s” gets longer each week.
7 Dec 2008, 20:39 pm
#654 AB: Never mind the internet there. Its nice just to get away from everything and just chill out. Lovely part of the country that.
#655 JayDaFiveOh: Hi mate. I asked spooner and he said Stick played for the Sharks at wing 3 years back. I don’t even remember him. I was just thinking of him being on the bench for the Boks at 10 for backup to Ruan. Not sure now though think he enjoys the 7′s but he looks such a great player.
7 Dec 2008, 20:39 pm
#656 carol: I dont mean to answer for GBS but to give you an idea, I have never been burgled, robbed or had any traumatic crime related incident in my life, I guess it is bad by international standards but not nearly as scary as it is made out to be. Tourism is the biggest growing industry in SA for the past 14 years.
7 Dec 2008, 20:40 pm
#656 carol: Tourist Industry is really bubbling…… some foreigners put themselves into dangerous situations because they do not generally know what to avoid, a few simple pointers sets that right though…….. it is a beautiful country with vast open spaces, an experience that will leave you wanting to stay !
7 Dec 2008, 20:41 pm
#659 carol: Carol 2 weeks holiday in SA is far, far too short. So many beautiful places to see here. Also the Kruger Park is the best to see in our winter. As it can go upto 45 the temp there in the summer far too hot. Winter its about 28 so much nicer and you see so much more of the animals in the winter months. Pilgrims Rest is a really lovely little town. All the tourists go there.
7 Dec 2008, 20:43 pm
#657 AB: AB what do you think of Stick playing in the Boks 15′s at 10 backup to Ruan?
7 Dec 2008, 20:44 pm
#664 Puma: Stick is a wing… not a fly half.
7 Dec 2008, 20:44 pm
Ok friends, I am off. Enjoy the rest of your evening! GBS we must do a quick beer this week when you are in Pta! Phone me.
7 Dec 2008, 20:45 pm
#665 grootblousmile: spooner said so on one of his posts here that he played wing for the Sharks a few years back. I don’t even remember him. Just that he is playing so well in the 7′s.

#649 JayDaFiveOh:
so whats your problem Mr. white man, seems you the one feeling the pinch in your conscience or what?
wtf gets you so nervy about some unassailable truth that the policies of white minority rule in this forlorn society, where your parents had to whip you off to safety in order to protect the lily white epidermis that is so profoundly more precious than the thronging native masses that were indigenous to the landscape are, was profoundly out of line and fundamentally flawed in its practices.
seems to me you are the one feeling highly strung sensitive about what exactly, who knows, the facts remain what they are, beat about the bush any which way you like to, racist and superiority bred distasteful ideology is an insidious and distasteful pastime and it exists in the minds of many men, who knows perhaps even in yours far more than you are ready to acknowledge.
and btw, wtf has ***** ****** got to do with your insecurities if anything?
7 Dec 2008, 20:46 pm
#666 AB: Will do… probably coming on Wednesday… to finalise the sale of one business.
7 Dec 2008, 20:46 pm
#661 AB: #662 grootblousmile: I do hope the tourist industry thrives, I was talking to a Capetonian who said she reversed her car into her garage at night!! (Did that mean so she could make a quick exit do you suppose) and all her jewels were in a bank in London!
A woman I met at a party said she lived in Port Elizabeth and drove about with a gun on her lap!! She was a solicitor.
7 Dec 2008, 20:47 pm
#666 AB: See you AB, who is your team by the way?
7 Dec 2008, 20:47 pm
Gbs, Carol, AB and everyone night all. I am out of here. Chat again during the week.
7 Dec 2008, 20:48 pm
#659 carol: My girlfriend (from Bham – her 1st visit) and I did a 3 week trip through SA last year. We felt 3 weeks was a bit too rushed! Kruger, Swaziland, all the way down the coast to CT (Dbn, KZN S Coast, EL, PE, Plett, Knysna) then back through the interior (Karoo, Bloem). Got to see a lot but would’ve been nice for an extra week.
7 Dec 2008, 20:49 pm
#669 grootblousmile: Just look both ways when you cross the road this time!!
7 Dec 2008, 20:49 pm
#672 Puma: Puma, take care and have a good evening X
7 Dec 2008, 20:50 pm
#670 carol: Nooooooooo… that is over exaggeration to the utmost degree.
One generally just aviod certain areas, see that gates close behind you… and lock your doors……
7 Dec 2008, 20:51 pm
#674 carol: Will certainly do !
7 Dec 2008, 20:51 pm
Mzwandile Stick is a great 7′s player and a pretty good motivator of men to boot, and pretty handy with the drop goal from way out along the sidelines, maybe far better even than wonderboy Steyn.
whether any one of the 15 a side coaches sees the value in drafting him into the 15′s game will be interesting to note, he probably could make the step up if required, as Delport and Eberhson and Aplon and some others have proved to do, whether he would want to diversify his talents, that will remain to be seen.
7 Dec 2008, 20:52 pm
Jaydafiveoh – just letting you know that Mr Mistofelees and heckle_jeckyl are the same person, skopskiet. You are not outnumbered by people with weird opinions gathered from watching fantasy movies.
7 Dec 2008, 20:53 pm
#672 Puma: Cheers Oerwoudkat.
7 Dec 2008, 20:54 pm
#655 JayDaFiveOh: Not sure how old he is, just remember him in the CC a few seasons back.
7 Dec 2008, 20:56 pm
#673 wooden spoon: You must have clocked up a few miles there. Difficult to get 4 weeks off work!!
7 Dec 2008, 20:59 pm
#676 grootblousmile: That sounds better, she was a wierd woman (The Port Elizabeth one) I was hoping I don’t meet too many like her when we get over!!
Gruff and hairy, you know the type!
7 Dec 2008, 20:59 pm
I see my namesake has decided to make an appearance, Mephistopheles looks to be hanging in the wings ready to make an appearance anytime soon, could well be rather interesting, or so we shall see.
7 Dec 2008, 21:02 pm
#682 carol: I know, I still haven’t fully caught up with my work after those 3 weeks. Won’t take 3 weeks off again, just not worth the work when you get back. Best to do the trip by focussing on a few places, that way you get to enjoy them more. I’d recommend the Cape and then up north near Kruger to see the wildlife.
7 Dec 2008, 21:03 pm
#684 heckle_jeckyl: Quick, sign out and back in as Mr Mistofelees!
7 Dec 2008, 21:04 pm
#668 heckle_jeckyl: sorry but shouldn’t parents being entitled to make decisions which they feel are in the interests of their children…oh right yeah I forget, they’re white so that makes everything they do all wrong in any case…my bad!
7 Dec 2008, 21:05 pm
#683 carol: I know the type…. hard and cold… a real bee with an itch…. probably bats for the other team as well…
7 Dec 2008, 21:06 pm
#667 Puma: Stick played under Kevin Putt in 04 and 05. He was mostly used as a substitute and his position was fullback. He also captained the sharks u/21 side from time to time. He was solid without being particularly spectacular. Treu spotted something and he drafted him into the 7′s squad in 2005. That, in my humble opinion, was a brilliant decision by Treu.
7 Dec 2008, 21:07 pm
naah, he ducked out again
maybe that should preclude a similar solution to the stand off
could mean there’s no fight left in the bigoted mindset, or else I’ve outlived my usefulness and hence time to be gone.
adios ‘Kinders van die Menslikheid’
7 Dec 2008, 21:07 pm
#689 King Shaka: He also played under Muir. Wing and fullback.
7 Dec 2008, 21:08 pm
#690 King Shaka: Well maybe in that case he’s better suited to 7s and may he continue winning for us!!
7 Dec 2008, 21:10 pm
#685 wooden spoon: We will have 5 days in Capetown so hopefully will see a tiny bit then with Grant10. Kruger will have to wait until another day.
7 Dec 2008, 21:10 pm
#133 wooden spoon: I reckon if they want to change the national animal, they should make it a n African honey badger – a ratel. They are as tough as they come, with attitude to match. If you are looking for a fight , look no further. Even elephants step to the side if they are going the other way on a bush track… because its not a matter of intimidation- they are just never intimidated.. and will always fight!
These buggers are so tough that in a fight with a Cape Cobra if they get bitten, they then kill the snake, go into a coma, wake up two hours later with the poison cleaned out of their system, and keep eating it!
Now I can relate to an animal like that. Although I think teh Boks can learn from the Springboks as well. Did you see how against England, with 20 minutes to go, the Boks were not walking to teh next lineout? They were jogging! If that does not make teh opposition feel weary, I dont know what will! In effect, the Boks were “pronking” like real Boks!
7 Dec 2008, 21:13 pm
#690 heckle_jeckyl: Skoppie don’t you ever get too tired to fight?
I must be lazy I just can’t be arsed to start a scrap!
7 Dec 2008, 21:15 pm
#688 grootblousmile: Bee with an itch, great saying I have not come across that……She had a husband he wasn’t up to much so perhaps she did LOL
7 Dec 2008, 21:17 pm
# Who are you to say all this kak to me? You clearly have an even bigger hatred for white people than Mr Mistofeles and Komphela put together!
So by your statement you’re assuming that all white saffers are racists, well, judging by such a pre-defined level of prejudice you’re not really in a position to talk either!
Sorry should I apologise for being white because it offends you? How about I thrown myself off a bridge and there’ll be one less white person in the world…would that make you feel better? I ain’t nervy in the slightest but I think feeling guilty and personally responsible for something that you have no control over or in my case nothing to do with is just plain irrational.
Through your venemous, hate filled diatribe you have clearly misinterpreted the point I was getting across. If you go back and actually read what I was saying, you will see I was not defending apartheid but simply arguing that blaming all white people for everything that is wrong is pointless and will solve nothing. Its like blaming all Germans, young or old for the holocaust!
And to accuse me of racism is pretty pathetic and shows how one-dimensional your argument really is. Yes ofcourse I’m racist, that’s why some of my good friends are black and I was delighted to see a very mixed Bok 7s team win yesterday…oh I’m a such a racist alright!
7 Dec 2008, 21:17 pm
#652 AB: Yes. GBS was there hehehehe

#687 JayDaFiveOh:
That they should, however no more so than any other tribal mother should be protective of her offspring, or is that just a little way below you framework of human reference?
You see the thing that I find rather abnormal and abhorrent is this predominantly sick reasoning that anything non white is in essence ‘inferior’, and this is the fundamental case of the rub.
If your European heritage is deemed so far superior than anything African, than just go there and stay in Europe, or Gondwanaland, or anywhere else that keeps you comfortable, but do not for a moment come and hurl your insidious racial undertones that simply due to the dermatological covering that surrounds a human beings form and person makes him by any rhyme or reason inferior to you born of noble white blood that you are, this is the fallacy of racial indoctrinated discriminate garbage, and for these principles I stand my ground firm and without one moment of digression from the fight for an equality that is absolute and not of fickle and divided standards.
Capisce?
