Brilliant Boks break drought

Brilliant Boks break drought

The Springboks won the George Sevens for the first time ever when they downed New Zealand 12-7 at a packed Outeniqua Park.

The Boks also broke the drought by winning back-to-back tournaments after Dubai last week and fittingly captain Mzwandile Stick crashed over for the crucial score. Before that Gio Aplon was adjudged to have knocked the ball over the line after a cross-kick, but from the scrum the Boks forced a tighthead and Stick did the rest.

DJ Forbe’s opened the scoring for the Kiwis, but a try late in the opening half by Renfred Deyzel brought the hosts back at 5-7. Stick then scored with three minutes to go and added the conversion.

“It’s awesome to win here, we’ve struggled in the past in George due to the pressure,” said Stick. “The support from the crowd was amazing and this was a very special one – our blood is green.”

Springboks - Tries: Renfred Deyzel, Mzwandile Stick. Conversion: Stick.

The Boks reached the final via a convincing 21-7 win over Fiji.

The hosts dominated possession in the opening half and three tries was the result – to Ryno Benjamin (2) and Mpho Mbiyozo who barged over.

The Fijians scored a consolation score with a minute to go but the result was beyond doubt.

Springboks - Tries: Mpho Mbiyozo, Ryno Benjamin (2). Conversions: Stick (3).

Meanwhile in the qaurters, Man of the Tournament Robert Ebersohn was instrumental in the Boks’ 17-12 victory over England.

Ebersohn scored the first try and set up the extra couple of scores. Ebersohn’s offload inbetween two tacklers inside his own 22 was instrumental in the second score, while his 40m break set up captain Mzwandile Stick for the try that sealed the win.

The Boks led 19-5 and a late try from the English was mere consolation.

Springboks - Tries: Robert Ebersohn, Ryno Benjamin, Mzwandile Stick. Conversion: Stick.

#293 carol: Its a different game much faster. But I think a lot eventually go and play in the 15′s. They guy that won the man of the match tonight had been asked to play in the S14 next year but turned it down for now. He is only 19 and wants to play in the 7′s for while yet. But he is a great player. England have the same really great players in your 7′s MJ could do himself a favour and look at your 7′s team he could get some of those guys to join his 15′s team. They are fast and look very good.

#299 carol: Its a saying here that a lot of Bok supporters says but for a captain that is a black south african to say it just made me smile huge. With all the interference we have had from the sport minister. Also these guys in our 7′s team are mostly black about 3 white guys so our Sport Minister should just take notice. We will always support our team no matter what colour they are if they are the best and winning. We go through a lot of nonsense here that no other country has to deal with. Anyway was proud of our captain today he also scored a great try.

#298 grootblousmile: I got a Zim bloke from work to do me a few more lines in your language but it was a long time since he had taken his exam so i only have a few left. I wanted to ask him for some “cheeky” comments but as I am one of the “bosses” I thought it inappropriate. LOL

    # Puma: What I like about 7′s is that they play into space…….. very little of the bash-it-up that you continually get in 15′s

#300 Puma: I expect MJ has got his scouts out everywhere trawling all the clubs looking for some raw tlent. Big Hit says Rob Andrew is very involved in the youth development, so I do hope they are finding some youths to develop…

#297 carol: In Joburg for the next two weeks then back down to the holiday town of Umhlanga cant wait. Also to get away from these huge thunderstorms. Annoying they are as they knock out your tv or computer but awesome to watch. Yes my dogs go back and forward with me all the time. One is a female 5 years and the otherone a male will be 10 years in Jan. He is getting on a bit. They just fall asleep on the back seat of the car. Never have a problem with them when we travel.

#302 carol: Now what would a real Zimbo know about Afrikaans…….. Zim is almost entirely English… and Shona and Matabele.

    # Puma: This colour issue is so tedious. In English Rugby and football it is not even mentioned. We would never say there are so many black/coloured players and so many white, it’s odd that it is of importance….
Some players do say the crowd can abuse them though!

#303 grootblousmile: Yes I enjoy that to gbs. So many times I thought there would be a run away try from the AB’s but our boys were so fast and there passing was quick. Also those cross kicks were really good. Never saw much kicking in last years 7′s. I suppose even in the 7′s now the defence is getting better to get through. But our defence just like in our 15′s is just awesome. What did you think of Stick the captain at the end when he told that interviewer “My blood is green” I thought it was awesome.

#307 carol: Here we have to have guys of colour in the teams no matter what. But for once we have players really there on merit and thats what is so great. These are not quota players anymore they deserve their place. Thats why they are so proud to be playing for the Boks. We really don’t give a hoot what colour plays as long as its our best players. Today was prove of that. Most of the team are people of colour and they were magnificent. Really proud of the guys.

#323 SodaJoe: Well at least you got good commentary. It was good to put one past the AB’s in George. The first time we have won there. This team look really good. So fast and their defence is awesome. Just like our 15′s defence. Not very big guys but they seem to take out most that are playing them. The next game is in NZ. So will see how they play there. I only really started to watch the 7′s from last year. Never was too interested before but am enjoying it now. Did you get any of the Golf at Sun City? Watched a lot of that today aswell. They said it went out to 103 countries today.
