Brilliant Boks break drought
6 Dec 2008
The Springboks won the George Sevens for the first time ever when they downed New Zealand 12-7 at a packed Outeniqua Park.
The Boks also broke the drought by winning back-to-back tournaments after Dubai last week and fittingly captain Mzwandile Stick crashed over for the crucial score. Before that Gio Aplon was adjudged to have knocked the ball over the line after a cross-kick, but from the scrum the Boks forced a tighthead and Stick did the rest.
DJ Forbe’s opened the scoring for the Kiwis, but a try late in the opening half by Renfred Deyzel brought the hosts back at 5-7. Stick then scored with three minutes to go and added the conversion.
“It’s awesome to win here, we’ve struggled in the past in George due to the pressure,” said Stick. ”The support from the crowd was amazing and this was a very special one – our blood is green.”
Springboks - Tries: Renfred Deyzel, Mzwandile Stick. Conversion: Stick.
The Boks reached the final via a convincing 21-7 win over Fiji.
The hosts dominated possession in the opening half and three tries was the result – to Ryno Benjamin (2) and Mpho Mbiyozo who barged over.
The Fijians scored a consolation score with a minute to go but the result was beyond doubt.
Springboks - Tries: Mpho Mbiyozo, Ryno Benjamin (2). Conversions: Stick (3).
Meanwhile in the qaurters, Man of the Tournament Robert Ebersohn was instrumental in the Boks’ 17-12 victory over England.
Ebersohn scored the first try and set up the extra couple of scores. Ebersohn’s offload inbetween two tacklers inside his own 22 was instrumental in the second score, while his 40m break set up captain Mzwandile Stick for the try that sealed the win.
The Boks led 19-5 and a late try from the English was mere consolation.
Springboks - Tries: Robert Ebersohn, Ryno Benjamin, Mzwandile Stick. Conversion: Stick.

Hi all,
I missed the finals but am glad to hear SA has won – I thought they were going to choke (always difficult to live up to expectations at home). Personally I do not like sevens, it is a bit like contact netball.
Carol,
Thanks for the list. I saw it just now (the forwarded version as Roy is asleep) and will definitely check it out. Most of the stuff is new to me as I am a bit stuck in a previous era and always appreciate some “education” on modern music! .
It was only a mountainbike and not a motorbike

#355 grootblousmile: Have you heard even a months worth yet?

6 Dec 2008, 20:38 pm
#362 Puma: Eclectic rather like me. Glad you have come across Duffy, she is a bit of a find isn’t she. Grant10 got me back into U2, I had forgotten how good they were.
I avoid 60′s it reminds me of people over 40 dancing badly when I was a teenager….
6 Dec 2008, 20:39 pm
#361 grootblousmile: Must be that condensed milk!! lol. Serious I have not met one South African that the mozzies bother. Just let my Scottish visitors come over here and they have bite marks all over their bodies that get huge like a tennis ball!! lol. Why they go for them I have no idea. They just never bother me at all.

Great taste Puma. Anyone who likes Jack Johnson is a friend of mine. This afternoon I listened to some old stuff from Shawn Phillips. It reminded me of Combi’s, surf and some other potent stuff of years gone by. Tassies (who also blogs here) will know what I am talking about.

#381 Puma: Can you understand any of it? I am running out of words now LOL !
6 Dec 2008, 20:57 pm
That was one of the most courageous committed performances I have seen of any Bok team for quite some time, that took some incredible deep seated belief and true grit spirit of absolute do or die commitment. A real joy to behold, and now its twice on the trot to whip all comers including NZ and Fiji and England to take the title.
Bok 7′s team have come of age, the real deal warriors lifting their levels of impassioned loyalty and dedication to one another and to their country as a whole, and what makes it even more fulfilling to cherish is the fact that this team is possibly the very first true bred multi national and multi cultural team of all races combining as one force, all for one and one for all, ‘eenheid maakt magt’ in the true sense of the colloquialism.
Well done Paul Treu and your enigmatic captain Mzwandile Stick, and the entire true bred multi national SA team, these boys pulled out every last ditch effort and showed what true SA sports endeavor is all about.
They all deserve a medal, the entire happy brave lot of them.
