Watson still in hot water

Civil rights initiative AfriForum have filed a hate speech complaint against Luke Watson in the Equality Court in Cape Town.

Watson, addressing a group at the University of Cape Town two months ago, allegedly said the problem with South African rugby was that it was “controlled by Dutchmen”.

He was later cleared of charges brought against him by SA Rugby. However, AfriForum chief executive Kallie Kriel said Watson’s ongoing refusal to withdraw his “hurtful statements” forced them into this course of action.

AfriForum had asked the court to order Watson to apologise unconditionally and to pay a suitable amount as compensation to an appropriate non-profit organisation.

“Watson’s deep-rooted ethnic prejudices against Afrikaners should be addressed with the same rigour as is the case with other incidents of racism in the community,” Kriel said.
