The Cardiff Blues secured their place as the top seeded quarter-finalists with a nine-try 62-20 victory over Calvisano.
They’ve booked a play-off match at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff and will be difficult to beat at the ground irrespective of who they face.
“We haven’t won anything yet. Last season we weren’t as bad a team as some people suggested, but this season we aren’t as good as some people would claim,” Blues coach Dai Young said.
“We learned a lot from reaching the quarter-finals last year and the key thing is clinching that home tie this time round. We have made the job easier, but it isn’t going to be easy.”
Calvisano lead 10-5 at one stage but Ben Blair scored his first of 22 points with a try to take the lead, while there were two tries apiece for Gareth Thomas and Rhys Thomas. Leigh Halfpenny, Martyn Williams, Xavier Rush and Maama Molitika all scored one each.
In the other tie of the evening, Gloucester failed to qualify for the quarter-final, losing 24-10 to Biaritzz. The French side led 17-0 at one stage and Gloucester were never in the match thereafter.
