Grey call in big guns
27 Jan 2009
Former Cheetahs forwards Barend Pieterse and Dougie Heymans will help with Grey College’s lineouts and scrums respectively this season.
In other Grey news, Dries van der Waal has stepped down as Grey’s 1st XV coach after 25 years in charge of undoubtedly the most successful rugby institution in the country and been replaced by Roelf Meyer and Ingo Machts.
Eleven players from Grey’s match 22 of last year are still around, so there will be some continuity.
Grey’s toughest game of 2009 will probably be their annual match against rivals Grey PE, who pushed them all the way in last year’s meeting.

#5 Wezwp: Hahahahaha. You are such a clown.
Last year we handed the Cape schools a royal hiding. Especially Paul Roos. Paarl Boys also came and went too. This year will be no different.
Grey unbeaten since August 2006. This year will be yet another unbeaten year with the core of the 2008 side in place. We play our “tough” games at home this year – Affies, Grey PE, and Glenwood. Our easy games like Paul Roos we play away.
FOR WE ARE THE BOYS OF GCB !!!!!!!!!!

Roelf Meyer? Not the ex-cabinet minister “canary” (from his days in the Army Choir) who smilingly signed off the whole country to the ANC at those Codesa talks? Is he coaching schoolboy rugby now?

Dries might have been ‘director’ of rugby, but Jaco Swanepoel did all the coaching – especially the backline – and I dare you find any schoolboy side in the world with as good basics as Grey anywhere in the world – I’ve watched the ‘cream’ of rugby schools in Brisbane, and most teams in SA Schools top 20 ranking would beat them by at least 20 points every time.
Yet despite all this school boy talent, our senior sides are not that competitive caompared to Aus teams which has so little players to pick from – is it just that our senior coaches are no good?
Have your say
