It was these same antipodes who said lets introduce an extra round of 3N matches and look at what good that has done …. make the tournament boring.

No I propose a 20 team super comp with 4 pools of 5 teams each. Each team plays 4 home and 4 away matches. The top 2 teams in each pool enters the Super 8 league played over 1 round. The teams that finished top on their pool plays 4 of the 7 matches at home.The winner of this league is crowned champions.

As for the teams that do qualify they can compete in a 2 pool losers competition. The top 2 team in each losers pool will play the for a wooden trophy at a neutral venue.

This would consolidate the SA player base, thereby ensuring that we are represented in the play-off phase, thus eliminating most of the problems.

The problem is that we cannot support 5 strong teams. We can’t even support 4 strong teams. But we can produce 3 competitive “super” teams. It will be the Bulls, Sharks and Stormers.

This is a simple solution, but the only one that makes sense. Less travelling, stronger SA teams, more diversity when it comes to the play-offs (no longer beign dominated by just Kiwi Teams) and a better all round product for the viewers.

Like it used to be in the Super 10.

I assume it means that each country has a league (the conferencing component), the winners of which advance to playoffs (the vertical)
The horizontal means the current arrangemant where you have a single (large) pool in a single league

To expand to 18 or 20 teams is totally ludicrous. Maybe, though, 12 teams, (made up of 4 SA 4 NZ 2 AUS + 2 South Seas/Pacific sides with the latter based in Aussie) would make more compelling viewing and not as much travelling. As much as I would love to see Argentina in the mix, I don’t think they have any alternative to the European regime that they have at the moment.

One other point about having fewer teams. The more teams you have the more refs you also have to have and even the supposed Top Team for this year has a few extremely sub-standard choices in it. If you want to keep spectators interested, then the standard of refereeing has to be considerably improved.

Easy direct flights and no jet lag.

Look at the interest in the Lions tour, 10 games being played in SA. NZ / AUS and SA play each other far too regularly, the 3N is a little boring [ perhaps if SA won it a little more often it wouldn't be]. Long tours, week day matches……I wish.
