Bax set for Ikeys debut
30 Jan 2009
Former Maties fullback Tiger Bax has been named in UCT’s starting line-up for Monday’s Varsity Cup clash against Stellenbosch.
Bax, who spent time with the Stormers this year, is one of six newcomers in the Tigers run-on side including winger Dane Johnson, centre Michael Nel, Nick Fenton-Wells at flank and tighthead prop Shane Meier.
While in a strange move, last year’s star flyhalf, Matthew Rosslee has been named at centre with debutant Maxwell Stoffels running at pivot.
JJ Gagiano will once again skipper the side in a repeat of last year’s final.
“It’s a vastly different team from last year’s final and there’s some pretty exciting new guys we’ve picked in the starting line-up,” says coach John Dobson. “The new guys, in particular, to look out for are Tiger Bax and Dane Johnson in the backline.”
Dobson and assistant coach Robbie Fleck have been working hard during December and January in preparation for this year’s competition and are eager to kick things off in style.
“It’s been quite a build-up already to the 2009 tournament and we’re looking forward to getting out there and playing on Monday,” said Dobson.
“Yes, it happens to be a repeat of last year’s final, but we’re simply looking at it as our first game of a new season and, hopefully, another step in the direction in this new era for UCT rugby.
“More importantly it’s a great occasion for us to pay homage to Monte Taljaard our star flank who was killed last year. His death puts things like simple log points into perspective.”
UCT – 15 Tiger Bax, 14 Dane Johnson, 13 Michael Nel, 12 Matt Rosslee, 11 Marvin Christians, 10 Maxwell Stoffels, 9 Stu Commins, 8 JJ Gagiano (C) 7 Enoch Panya, 6 Nick Fenton-Wells, 5 Don Armand, 4 Martin Muller, 3 Shane Meier, 2 Dayne Jans, 1 Dylan Rogers.
Subs – 16 Mark Goosen, 17 Ashley Wells, 18 Dane Galley, 19 Kuselo Moyake, 20 Michael Morris, 21 Kyle Wickens, 22 Therlow Pietersen.

Deaf ***
Two deaf people get married. During the first week of marriage, they find that they are unable to communicate in the bedroom when they turn off the lights (because they can’t see each other using sign language).
After several nights of fumbling around and misunderstandings, the wife proposes a solution. “Honey,” she signs, “Why don’t we agree on some simple signals? For instance, at night, if you want to have *** with me, reach over and squeeze my left breast one time. If you don’t want to have ***, reach over and squeeze my right breast one time.”
The husband thinks this is a great idea and signs back to his wife, “Great idea! Now if you want to have *** with ME, reach over and pull on my ***** one time.” “And if you don’t want to have ***, reach over and pull on my *****… fifty times!”

My how the years go by, this boykie went to my High School. When I was in matric I used to hear about a certain Tiger Bax tearing up the rugby fields in the prep school and I remember thinking “what an odd name”. GO Tiger, show them that old College (St Andrews) spirit!

How the years roll by indeed. I used to baby sit Tiger at Mr Clarke’s house (the headmaster). He was very good friends with the College headmaster’s son before they moved to the UK so he spent some weekends there when the headmaster and his wife were off at functions. Was always incredibly gifted. His eldest brother (Rest In Peace) was a good friend and teammate of mine. He too was a phenomenal all round athlete – played wing and flank for the 1st team (and if I recall properly, held a couple of the junior 400m records).

Typical Ikeys – always stealing Matie players. And with a name like Gagiano their captain is surely from Stellenbosch.

#7 wpforever: Well his name was Liam. If i recall correctly he had it changed officially to Tiger because thats all anybody ever called him so there was confusion. #8 H: He isn’t and never has been a Maties student. He attended Western Province Rugby academy last year and when he did appear for Maties they didn’t welcome him because they thought he was replacing their own players. Gagiano is an Italian name you tool. With a brain like that you’re surely from Stellenbosch.

#9 Tarlo: Not too bright, are you? I don’t even know why I’m explaining a joke to you. Maties have a reputation (fairly or unfairly depending on where you live) of luring all the top players.
BTW, if you had a tertiary education you may actually have heard of Jannie Gagiano.
