Cheetahs cotton-wool Jongi

The Cheetahs won’t risk an ailing Jongi Nokwe ahead of their five-match tour Down Under.

Nokwe injured his hand in the friendly against the Bulls, and after much deliberation the Cheetahs management felt it prudent to rest the Springbok winger this weekend. The exciting youngster Bjorn Basson will take Nokwe’s place when the Cheetahs travel to the Lions this Saturday.

“Jongi still has a bit of pain in his hand, and we ultimately decided it wasn’t worth the risk,” assistant coach Hawies Fourie told keo.co.za. “It’s going to be a tough tour, so we need him fit. He should start against the Force next week.”

Head coach Naka Drotske has otherwise selected his strongest team for the Lions clash. Apart from Nokwe, the backline that faced the Bulls remains intact, and up front, Bees Roux is set to face Lions loosehead Heinke van der Merwe.
