Tukkies ran in seven tries as they thumped their neighbours TUT 45-9 in a one sided affair in Pretoria. The visitors dominated from start to finish in a game highlighted by tries and three yellow cards. TUT were never in the encounter and Tukkies’ domination of the scrums was the key to their success.
Tukkies started the better off the two sides and scored the first try of the game when prop Ettienne Breytenbach powered over the line in the fifth minute.
The University of Pretoria then scored two tries in just three minutes, first through centre Franco Booysen and then full back Johan Jackson. Piet Swart converted both with ease as Tukkies ran out to a 21-0 lead.
TUT eventually got on the board in the 16 minute through a Adillio Coutriers penalty and the youngster added another two shortly after to narrow the gap to 12 points.
Tukkies dominated the set pieces and eventually got their fourth try when Petrus Vorster crossed the line just two minutes before the break and they went into the break 17 points to the good.
After the break, the game struggled to get going and Tukkies were reduced to 14 men when try scorer Voster was sent to the bin in 53 minute.
With two minutes left on the clock for Voster, replacement Emile Verster became the second Tukkies player to be sent to the bin for slowing down the ball at the breakdown. TUT failed to take advantage of their extra man and when Jacques Venterwas shown the third yellow of the game for a dangerous challenge, the hosts had blown any chance of getting back into the game.
Tukkies eventually registered points in the second half through a break away try by winger Aaron Denenga and with time running out Luvuyo Mhlobiso got Tukkies sixth try.
However, the scoring was not yet over as Gerhard van der Merwe bagged his side’s seventh of the night as Tukkies maintain their place at the top of the Varsity Cup log.
In the nights other results Maties beat Shimlas 26-5 while Pukke thumped NMMU 41-13.
