Tana turns out for Toulon
19 Feb 2009
Tana Umaga will play his first match for Toulon on Friday after securing his playing licence.
The former All Blacks centre has been involved with the French club as a manager but recently decided he would adopt a more hands-on approach by re-taking the field. Umaga will start against Stade Francais in Paris this Friday.
Umaga had hoped to begin his playing stint on 30 January against Mont-de-Marsan but his player registration had not yet been received.
Club president Mourad Boudjellal confirmed the paperwork is now in order and Umaga will travel with team to Paris as a player.
“We received the letter on Tuesday morning,” Boudjellal said. “It was one of the most important letters of the year.
“But we will be even happier at kick-off, when he can express himself on the pitch, when he can give all he can for this club and this team.”
Toulon are in a fight to avoid Top 14 relegation and currently sit third from bottom on the log.
