The Lions will appeal Heinke van der Merwe’s one-match ban that would see him miss the clash with the Bulls.
Van der Merwe and Jannie Boshoff were cited for a dangerous tackle on Frans Steyn in the 76th minute of their 25-10 loss to the Sharks, with Boshoff the only one to get off at a hearing last night.
Van der Merwe was deemed to have lifted Steyn beyond the horizontal and made no attempt to lower him safely back to ground.
Lions management confirmed to keo.co.za that they would appeal the verdict that ruled the Bok prop out for a week. They are hoping to hear by Thursday at the latest whether the appeal has been successful.
Van der Merwe’s possible exclusion would be a massive blow to the Lions. The Bulls have a perceived weakness at tighthead, and Van der Merwe was the one who could expose it.
However, without him there, the entire front row loses its aura.
Lawrence Sephaka could gain a promotion from the bench to start at loosehead, or JC Janse van Rensburg is another option.
