Powell primed for World Cup return

Powell primed for World Cup return

Neil Powell has returned to the Springbok Sevens squad and will compete in the World Cup in Dubai.

Powell has recovered from the broken arm that ruled him out of the first four legs of the IRB Sevens Championship. Although he returns in time to feature in the World Cup he will not skipper the team. That honour will fall to Mpho Mbiyozo.

“We gave Neil a good run-out on Tuesday night against Hamiltons and he came through with flying colours,” said coach Paul Treu. “I know he cannot wait to get back into action, but we will have to manage him carefully.”

Springbok Sevens World Cup squad:

Gio Aplon
Ryno Benjamin
Kyle Brown
Renfred Dazel
Paul Delport
Robert Ebersohn
Frankie Horne
Lionel Mapoe
Neil Powell
Philip Snyman

Whatever Neil lacks in magic – he makes up for in defence. Dont think he adds that much though overall.

Once the 7′s Series is over it is going to be great to see Robert Ebersohn and Phillip Snyman play center for the Cheetahs.

The sooner the Cheetahs can start playing Mapoe, the better as well.

Cheetahs backline for the CC should be a young one:

15 – Bjorn Basson (hope we buy him)
    14 – Wilton Petersen
    13 – Phillip Snyman
    12 – Robert Ebersohn
    11 – Fabian Juries / Nokwe
    10 – Bosman /JLP
9 – ANYONE OTHER THAN TEWIS

I think Wilton Pieterson should rather play 15 and Basson to 14.

Otherwise you have a good young Cheetah team there. I think Cheetahs should get hold of Duvenage from the Stormers because I feel he is being wasted there as they already have Hoffmann waiting to step up for Conradie…

    Hey Keo…

You guys are doing great work in terms of advertising the schools rugby. What about the Baby Boks, there talent also needs to be showcased. I always struggle to find out who is in the squad and where they are from…. or does anyone know where I can get this information?

under 19 and under 20 rugby needs to be highlighted

What’s with True’s reluctance to use players North of the Freestate border? He’d rather go for club players from the Cape regions than pick provincial players from the Lions, Bulls, Valke or Pumas.
I’m pretty sure they can add a lot more to the squad because of first class experience but we get to see provincialism at it’s worst in the 7′s squad.
