Mallett brings in reinforcements

Under-fire Italy coach Nick Mallett has added eight players to his squad for the remaining Six Nations matches against Wales and France.

Andrea Masi returns after the Biarritz back served his three-week ban, while flyhalf Kristopher Burton, flankers Simone Favaro and Jean-Francois Montauriol, lock Tommaso Reato, prop Fabio Staibano, centre Roberto Quartaroli and wing Michele Sepe have all been called up to the team.

Centre Gonzalo Garcia is out after taking a knock to the head against Scotland, while prop Ignacio Rouyet has been dropped from the squad.

Forwards: Mauro Bergamasco, Marco Bortolami, Martin Castrogiovanni, Carlo Antonio Del Fava, Santiago Dellape, Simone Favaro, Leonardo Ghiraldini, Jean-Francois Montauriol, Carlos Nieto, Sergio Parisse, Salvatore Perugini, Tommaso Reato, Franco Sbaraglini, Josh Sole, Fabio Staibano, Alessandro Zanni.

Backs: Andrea Bacchetti, Mirco Bergamasco, Kristopher Burton, Gonzalo Canale, Pablo Canavosio, Paul Griffen, Andrea Marcato, Andrea Masi, Luke McLean, Gilberto Pavan, Matteo Pratichetti, Roberto Quartaroli, Giulio Rubini, Michele Sepe.

Evens: Hadden has our backing

Scotland winger Thom Evans insists that coach Frank Hadden has the full support of all his players.

Hadden’s future has been in the spotlight, with the 54-year-old reportedly being told he needs to secure two wins in this year’s Six Nations to hold onto his job.

A victory over Italy has eased the pressure slightly after defeats to Wales and France, but the chances of a win in either of Scotland’s two remaining games against England and Ireland appear very slim.

However, Evans has come out in support his boss.

“Frank has got the support of all the players,” said Evans. “I think he’s a great coach and if ever there’s a problem which he feels needs to be addressed, he’ll always take the player aside and explain the reasoning for it.

“That’s great to do when you’re the head coach and I’m firmly behind him.”
