Naka Drotske has kept Jacques-Louis Potgieter at flyhalf for Friday’s match against the Blues.
Potgieter is preferred over Meyer Bosman, who rejoins the starting side at No 12. After recovering from concussion, Corne Uys will wear 13 in midfield. Danwell Demas reclaims his spot on the right wing and Tewis de Bruyn will start at scrumhalf.
Nico Breedt is back in the second row while Springbok Adriaan Strauss returns at hooker.
The Cheetahs performed better than expected against the Hurricanes last Saturday. The scoreline read 29-12, but the visitors were in the contest and seemed unencumbered by the fact that they were missing a number of first-choice players.
They thrived in a high-paced match in New Plymouth, but again were guilty of conceding soft tries which nullified their own scoring efforts. They face another expansive team in the Blues this week, and their defence will need to improve significantly.
Drotske’s charges scored four tries against the Blues in Bloemfontein last year, but conceded 50 points. The Cheetahs have already lost all four matches this season, and at this stage look likely to complete their tour without a win for the fourth straight year.
The Blues will be dangerous having lost narrowly to the Sharks, and even though they remain a disjointed outfit, in broken play they are lethal. When characteristic Blues runners exploit characteristically sloppy Cheetahs defence, the Kiwis are always going to rack up big numbers.
For the Cheetahs’ sake, let’s hope Friday’s showing is something out of the ordinary.
