Barry Goodes looks set to make his Super 14 debut for the Lions when they face the Stormers at Newlands.
Doppies la Grange’s injury has meant Jaque Fourie requires a new midfield partner, with coach Loffie Eloff expected to opt for Goodes. The former Cheetahs centre returned from Italian club rugby late last year and was awarded a contract in Jo’burg in early February after initially being placed on trial.
Eloff selected Goodes for his Super 14 squad ahead of Walter Venter due to the former’s versatility, but he hasn’t had any opportunities to prove himself this year. On Saturday he will face Bok centres Jean de Villiers and Gcobani Bobo.
Venter has been playing for UJ in the Varsity Cup as well as the Golden Lions in the Vodacom Cup.
In other team news, lock Jannes Labuschagne is fit again after minor knee surgery, and could be used in the 22.
The Lions’ team will be announced tomorrow.
