Flyhalf Warren Seals kicked Kearsney to a 19-5 victory over Durban High School.
Kearsney have not lost to DHS at home since 2000 and they kept that record in tact with a solid performance on Saturday.
Leading 9-0 at half-time, Kearsney increased their tempo and made better use of the ball in the set phases. They out-muscled their heavier opponents up front with lock, Shaun Baxter, spearheading Kearsney’s pack with an industrious effort. He was ably assisted by flanker and captain, De Walt Boshoff, who led from the front.
DHS’s flankers, Ruan du Toit and Dillion Bennett, mastered the breakdown by stealing ball on the ground at will. However, their efforts were in vain as Kearsney secured their first win of the season.
‘The boys really put in a big effort after last week’s loss to Hilton,’ Kearsney coach Barend Steyn told keo.co.za. ‘We are delighted to grab a win over a highly competitive DHS side and avenge last season’s defeat.’ Boshoff added that he was ‘over the moon’ with the win.
DHS will need to pay more attention to the set phases if they are going to be a force this season, while Kearsney’s win puts them in good stead for their second annual House of Paint rugby festival that will be held over the Easter weekend.
