Cheeky Watson has released an official statement denying he has been replaced as head of the new Eastern Cape franchise.
According to reports in Afrikaans newspaper Sondag, the director of sport in the Eastern Cape had been dumped from his position as the head of the new Eastern Cape franchise and was to be replaced by Bafundi Makubalo.
Watson was said to have been sacked following a meeting last week with the MEC of Sport in the Eastern Cape, president of SA Rugby Oregan Hoskins, Cedric Frolick and representatives of Eastern Province Rugby Union and Border, but he has strongly denied the claims.
‘The article is clearly mischievous and completely inaccurate reporting, as the meeting with Regan Hoskins, and the national and regional government representatives was extremely cordial and intent on ensuring that the Eastern Cape franchise is a success,’ said Watson.
‘In fact, I have been tasked with raising the funding for the franchise from corporate South Africa and not from SA Rugby or the government and I am delighted to say we are making remarkable progress and will be able to make some announcements in the next few weeks’.
