Lucas gets chance to shine
Reds scrumhalf Ben Lucas will use the next three weeks to stamp his name on the No 9 position at the franchise and stake a claim for a berth in the Wallabies squad.
The 21-year-old has shared the role with Will Genia in the Super 14 this season, but with the latter suspended for three matches Lucas has been handed an ideal opportunity to cement his place.
On the mend from a rib cartilage injury, Lucas’s recovery has been aided by the extra week off due to the Reds’ bye last week and he is poised to get more game against the Chiefs on Saturday in the absence of Genia.
‘Any chance I get to put my name a bit more in stone in the position is good,’ said Lucas. ‘We’ve sort of been playing off each other, putting pressure on each other each week and no one has really nailed it down just yet.
‘To get some good game time in the next few weeks will definitely go a long way.’
