Lam looks to plug leaking defence

Blues coach Pat Lam has reworked his backline for this weekend’s clash against the Waratahs following their shocking defensive display against the Chiefs.

The Blues’ soft defence let in nine tries in their record loss to the Chiefs and Lam has reacted accordingly. His backline was shredded by the Chiefs in Hamilton and Lam has used all the experience he has available to solve the problem.

Fullback Isaia Toeava has been moved up to centre where he will join Jamie Helleur who is recalled from the bench to replace Michael Hobbs at inside centre.

Paul Williams takes over at fullback with centre Anthony Tuitavake moving out to the wing where he replaces Rene Ranger who drops to the bench after his nightmare against Sitiveni Sivivatu.

The pack has one change from the starting eight who fronted the Chiefs. Flanker Justin Collins is out with a hamstring strain and Onosai’i Auva’a takes over at No 7.

Blues - 15 Paul Williams, 14 Anthony Tuitavake, 13 Isaia Toeava, 12 Jamie Helleur, 11 Joe Rokocoko, 10 Jimmy Gopperth, 9 Taniela Moa, 8 Jerome Kaino, 7 Onosai’i Auva’a, 6 Chris Lowrey, 5 Ali Williams, 4 Kurtis Haiu, 3 John Afoa, 2 Keven Mealamu (c), 1 Tevita Mailau.
Subs – 16 Tom McCartney, 17 Charlie Faumuina, 18 Anthony Boric, 19 Peter Saili, 20 Chris Smylie, 21 Michael Hobbs, 22 Rene Ranger.
