Grey step on the gas

Grey College beat a spirited Framesby side 40-10 in the main curtain-raiser at the Graeme College rugby festival on Saturday.

However, the Bloemfontein boys only led 14-10 at the break, having withstood a physical 30-minute onslaught by Framesby, and only indifferent refereeing allowed them to get into their stride in the second half.

After some stern words by the Grey coaching staff, the Free Staters played with more structure after the break, scoring 26 unanswered points. They managed to out-scrum their opponents and disrupt their lineouts, which effectively allowed the backs to run onto the ball and stamp their authority on the game.

Grey finished with six tries to Frameby’s one.

‘The second half was much better as we went through the phases and looked after the ball,’ Grey coach Ingo Machts told ‘I was happy with the result but there is still a lot of room for improvement.’

Rhyk Welgemoed was Framesby’s stand-out player, while Grey’s collective team effort in the second half secured the win.

Grey’s next match is against Brandwag School on Tuesday in Uitenhage.

• Two big upsets occurred earlier in the day with Marlow Agricultural beating Grey High School 16-15 and Nico Malan downing a disjointed Queens College 16-13.
