Stellies sizzling for final
30 Mar 2009
The temperature in Stellenbosch is mirrored by the atmosphere in the Danie Craven Stadium.
The floodlights may already be on but the weather is still perfect at Coetzenburg, with a slight breeze cooling down the temperature to the late twenties.
The party has already started as the braais are burning in the stands and the consumption of the amber nectar is only increasing. In terms of attire, maroon is the colour of choice, and there are not many Pukke fans to be seen. If there are, they certainly aren’t showing their allegiances.
The ground is not yet up to the 18 000 capacity as it was in last year’s dramatic final, but the crowds are slowly filtering in.
Entertainment was provided by the teams of Armentum (Shimlas) and Dromedaris (UJ) in the koshuis final, with the former winning 30-16, while the Maties dancing girls are showing why it is not only their rugby team that is so highly rated.
The beats are also pumping as the crowd eagerly awaits Kurt Darren’s live performance of the Varsity Cup song of the year – ‘Kaptein (Span die Seile)’.
As the classic goes: ‘Dis altyd lente, in die oe van die Stellenbos studente’.
