Ellis ruled out of Bulls clash

Ellis ruled out of Bulls clash

Crusaders scrumhalf Andy Ellis will not start in Friday’s Super 14 rugby match against the Bulls in Christchurch.

Ellis had X-rays yesterday after hurting his ribs in Saturday’s 11-7 win over the Stormers.

Team management said the x-ray showed no new fractures and revealed that previous injuries, picked up in July while playing for Canterbury and November while playing for the All Blacks, were well-healed.

However, Ellis will not play against the fourth-placed Bulls with his place likely to be filled by Kahn Fotuali’i, who replaced Ellis at halftime on Saturday.

The Crusaders team to play the Bulls will be announced on Wednesday.

Major injury sidelines Gear

The Hurricanes have been dealt a major blow ahead of their match against the Sharks with winger Hosea Gear ruled out for what could be the remainder of the Super 14.

Gear badly injured his knee in the weekend’s 38-32 victory over the Lions in Johannesburg and is expected to be sidelined for up to two months.

Gear might be fit again come semifinal time, but it’s doubtful he’d be considered for selection after such a long layoff.

Flanker Scott Waldrom has also been ruled out for the next fortnight with an abdominal strain. Both Gear and Waldrom are returning to New Zealand to begin their rehabilitation. No replacements have been called for at this stage.

Gear sustained a posterior cruciate ligament injury to his left knee, with Canes officials estimating he will need six to eight weeks rehabilitation.

Prop John Schwalger also limped off during the win over the Lions, but has responded well to treatment and should be available for selection against the Sharks.
