The annual WP Rugby Schools Day will showcase some of the best talent the Western Cape has to offer.
In order to promote the traditional style of running rugby, there will be no kicking for posts – for either penalties or conversions – with points only available for scoring tries. And unlike regular hour-long schoolboy matches, these encounters will be just 40 minutes each.
There are several interesting matches taking place on Tuesday, especially later in the day when the 1st XVs are involved.
Wynberg take on Bellville High School and both sides will look to dominate each other physically via their monster pack of forwards.
Paarl Boys’ High will be hoping to put SACS to the sword. ‘Boishaai’ have already played three games this season, while SACS had their first run-out last weekend when they narrowly beat Bellville.
Paul Roos then play Rondebosch, who are under-cooked having not yet played together as a team this year. Expect the Stellenbosch boys to keep the game tight and work hard in the set-phases, with the ‘Bosch’ side aiming to move the ball into space.
The last match sees Paarl Gym up against the ‘Rugby Romantics’, Bishops. Paarl Gym, who had an unbeaten run last year, are treating this as preparation for their upcoming Wildeklawer Super 14 tournament taking place in the middle of April. Bishops, on the other hand, are in need of some game time before they play St Andrew’s College this weekend.
One player to watch is Bishops pivot, Sam Lane, son of Tim, the Wallabies’ World Cup-winning coach. Lane has all the makings of a top-class flyhalf and is definitely a player for the future.
