Rassie: Wylie the logical option
1 Apr 2009
Rassie Erasmus believes Wylie Human’s form in the Vodacom Cup justifies a starting spot in the Super 14.
The Stormers were dealt a double blow when Nick Koster and Tonderai Chavhanga succumbed to injury ahead of their Australasian tour. Gcobani Bobo shifted to the wing, but after the backline’s collective slump in Christchurch, Human was called to Australia and fast-tracked to the starting line-up.
Erasmus told keo.co.za the move should come as no surprise, even though Human has not featured for the Stormers in 2009.
‘I can’t understand what all the fuss is about, he’s the logical choice. He’s always been next in line and with two frontline wingers injured, he will now get his chance. Wylie’s been in good form for the Vodacom Cup side and scored two tries last week.
‘The move will also allow our premier centre combination [Jean de Villiers and Bobo] more game time.’
Erasmus dismissed the idea of playing Conrad Jantjes on the wing and retaining Percy Montgomery at fullback.
‘Jantjes was the No 1 fullback for the Springboks last year and probably the most consistent fullback in world rugby. Percy is retiring soon, but still has a big influence off the field. With only six games to go, it’s important that Connie gets game time.’
The Stormers coach also said Willem de Waal has not been dropped and that they were always going to play Peter Grant at 10 against the Waratahs. De Waal had a forgettable showing against the Crusaders, but this hasn’t factored into team selection.
The Stormers pack is unchanged despite being nailed by the Crusaders and referee Keith Brown at scrum-time. Wicus Blaaw keeps his place ahead of veteran loosehead JD Moller.
‘Wicus had a good game last week,’ said Erasmus. ‘The referee was very inexperienced, and watching the tape we have decided Wicus didn’t play badly at scrum-time.’

#296 whatever: I can see Butch getting a recall if Boks are stuck, he outplayed Cipriani again tonight and his goal-kicking is much improved with Bath near the top of the league.
It’s kind of crazy on here tonight innit

#303 Big Hit: I reckon Butch James should make the squad. Pienaar is still number one though.
It’s been like this here for some time now. It all culminated in the bannings 2 days ago. A lot of people are unhappy with a core of bloggers who turn this place into a pig trough.
OK, I’m out for real now. Cheers.
Carol – Hater has been really funny tonight. Great entertainment. Later.
