Graeme College produced the performance of the Grey Easter Festival so far by beating Hilton College 15-13 on Monday.
Playing with the wind at their backs, Graeme controlled the first half through some intelligent tactical kicking into the corners and led 10-0 at the break. In the second half, Hilton struggled to come to terms with the wind and the tigerish Graeme defence.
In the end, Graeme scored three tries to one, with Robert Louw grabbing a double. The lock had a superb game, stealing Hilton’s lineout ball at will.
Graeme coach Brendan Grant was delighted with the result.
‘Our boys knew we had to defend for our lives after half-time which we thankfully did. This performance is one of the gutsiest I have ever seen by any side I have ever been involved with.’
In an earlier game, Grey PE obliterated Kingswood College 71-13, with flanker Reinier Erasmus scoring five of his side’s 11 tries.
After leading 24-13 at half-time the hosts ran the ball from everywhere in the second half.
Grey scrumhalf Scott Macarthy produced a commanding display from the base of the scrum, while flyhalf Nic Holton kicked well in difficult conditions, scoring 16 points via eight conversions.
The Grey Easter Festival concludes on Wednesday, with Grey taking on Hilton in the pick of the matches.
