Challengers thrash Royals

Five wickets from veteran Anil Kumble helped Bangalore to a comprehensive 76-run win over the Rajasthan Royals at Newlands.

The Royals looked set to continue where they left off last year as three early wickets from Dimitri Mascarenhas left Ray Jennings’ men in trouble at 17-3, but a brilliant 66 from composed captain Rahul Dravid helped the Challengers to a competitive 133-8 off their 20 overs.

While competitive, the total was hardly intimidating but five wickets in just nine overs and 134 seemed a long way off, and in the end it proved too much as the defending champions fell 76 runs short.

Kumble was the pick of the bowlers finishing with figures of 5-5 off his 3.1 overs as spin again proved to be the main destroyer in the shortest form of the game.

Bangalore Royal Challengers – 134-8
Rahul Dravid 66, Kevin Pietersen 32, Dimitri Mascarenhas 3-20.

Rajasthan Royals – 58 all out
Tyron Henderson 11, Anil Kumble 5-5, Praveen Kumar 2-7.
Bangalore won by 76 runs
