Sachin Tendulkar’s unbeaten 59 was the highlight of the Mumbai Indians’ 19 -run win over the Super Kings in the IPL opener.
Tendulkar only faced 49 balls and batted throughout the innings at Newlands. The captain was happy to play the anchor role and he always knew what a competitive target would be.
Together with Abhishek Nayar, who raced to 35 off 14 balls, they added 46 in three-and-a-half overs to provide the necessary impetus in the final stages.
Two early wickets fell in the Super Kings’ run-chase and they were always behind the run-rate. Matthew Hayden led the chase valiantly for his 44, but Mumbai’s attack, headed by Lasith Malinga, always had matters under control.
The only South African on display, JP Duminy, had a disappointing day as he only scored 9 despite his team’s triumph.

Sachin Tendulkar 59*
Chennai Super Kings 146-7 in 20 overs
