The on-again, off-again match between the New Zealand Maori and a Springbok XV has been definitively bulleted.
The match was originally scheduled as part of the Springbok warm-ups ahead of the British & Irish Lions tour but called off when Saru deemed the Maori a team selected along racial lines which conflicts with the South African constitution.
Saru issued a further statement that declared the match back on, but in another about turn have cancelled the match for good. Acting managing director Andy Marinos said the match was not financially viable.
‘Unfortunately we were unable to identify a commercial partner within the time constraints to make the match commercially viable,’ said Marinos. ‘We would have been delighted to host the Maori but our best efforts to put together a venue and sponsor to cover the costs did not bear fruit.’
The match between a South African XV and Namibia in Windhoek on 29 May will go ahead as scheduled.
