Rain sinks Punjab again

The Kolkata Knight Riders beat the Kings XI Punjab by 11 runs on the D/L method at Kingsmead.

Punjab were denied by rain for the second game in succession, but it’s debatable whether they would have won in any event, given the form a rampant Chris Gayle was displaying.

When the rain fell Gayle stood unbeaten on 44 off 26 balls and was looking likely to play the starring role in chasing down the 159 Punjab had set.

In their batting innings Punjab recovered from a poor start where they slumped to 43-3, thanks in large part to the medium pace bowling of Sourav Ganguly, who dismissed Ravi Bopara and Irfan Pathan, while Ishant Sharma accounted for Karan Goel.

However, a 56-run partnership between Kumar Sangakkara and Yuvraj Singh stabilised Punjab, and set the platform for a late charge towards a competitive total.

Singh eventually fell for 38 but Sri Lanka skipper Mahela Jayawardene continued the plunder, smashing 31 off 16 deliveries to guide Punjab to a total they would have felt was defendable.
