Adam Gilchrist’s blistering 71 set up the Deccan Chargers’ convincing 24-run win over Bangalore at Newlands.
The captain’s runs came off just 45 balls as he and Rohit Sharma flayed the attack to all parts. Sharma lashed 52 off 30 balls before finally being removed by Dale Steyn.
Steyn was the most economical of all the Bangalore bowlers but surprisingly captain Kevin Pietersen didn’t let him complete his full quota.
Chasing 184-6, the Challegers got off to the worst possible start as Kiwi Jesse Ryder was bowled first ball by Fidel Edwards. Jacques Kallis came in and produced a cameo innings of 15 off 14 balls that included three boundaries, but at 19-2, they were always chasing the game.
Rahul Dravid continued his good form with 48 but Scott Styris finished the deal as his medium-pacers claimed three scalps to ensure a comfortable triumph.
