Springbok lock Andries Bekker could miss the British & Irish Lions series because of a rib injury.
The Stormers second rower was helped from the field in the Cape franchise’s 18-11 win over the Highlanders in Dunedin. News from the Stormers camp is Bekker may have broken a rib, an injury that will sideline him for an extended period. The seriousness of his ailment will be known on Monday following various tests and scans.
The Stormers are likely to lose their star lineout jumper, a cruel blow given this was Bekker’s first start following a foot injury that ruled him out for four weeks previously. But the Boks will hope Bekker’s ribs are not seriously damaged as it may affect his involvement in those games against the Lions.
The Stormers have been hit by injuries in 2009, and with Adriaan Fondse already out for the season with a wrist injury, the Cape franchsie will start a second-string lock pairing against the Chiefs next week.
