Chargers stay top

The Deccan Chargers maintained their 100% record in this year’s IPL with a 12-run victory over the Mumbai Indians in Durban.

Herschelle Gibbs and Adam Gilchrist got the Chargers off to a good start with Gibbs playing the more controlled innings while the veteran Australian did what he does best blasting boundaries to all parts of the ground.

When Gilchrist finally went Dwayne Smith picked up where he left off and the Chargers looked on course for a big total.

But a crazy run out which brought about the demise of Gibbs saw the momentum swing in the favour of Mumbai as the chargers stumbled to 169-9 off their twenty overs – several runs short of what they looked like setting.

In response the Indians got off to a poor start losing the dangerous Sanath Jayasuriya for just one run. The pair of JP Duminy and Sachin Tendulkar put Mumbai back on track with an 82-run partnership.

But after the tactical time out things swung back in the Chargers favour as got the key wicket of Tendulkar and then tightened the screws as the required run rate began to climb and in the end it proved to be to much for the Indians as they fell 12 runs short, despite some power hitting from Harbhajan Singh late in the innings.

Deccan – 169-9 (20 Overs)
Herschelle Gibbs 58, Adam Gilchrist 35, Lasith Malinga 3-19.

Mumbai – 156-7 (20 overs)
Sachin Tendulkar 36, JP Duminy 47, Pragyan Ojha 3-21.

Deccan won by 12 runs.
