Irfan Pathan performed with bat and ball in the Kings XI Punjab’s 27-run win over the Rajasthan Royals at Newlands.
Punjab set a competitive total of 139-6 thanks to the 75-run fifth wicket partnership between Kumar Sangakkara (60) and Pathan (39). The pair took their side from 48-4 to 123-5 in a patient exhibition of strokeplay, but the Royals would have felt they let the Kings XI off the hook.
Young left arm seamer Kamran Khan was the pick of the bowlers with 2-15 in four overs, while Shane Warne had a day to forget with the ball as he went for 0-37.
In their chase the defending champs lost wickets regularly in the face of disciplined and aggressive bowling. Pathan took the new ball and dismissed both openers Graeme Smith and Swapnil Asnodkar for two and three respectively.
At 35-5 and then 42-6 the Royals were struggling, but a 60-run stand between Warne and Ravindra Jadeja set up a tense finish.
When Jadeja fell however, they needed an improbable 38 off 11 balls and this was a task too much.
