Despite JP Duminy’s 59 Mumbai failed to chase 120 as the Kings XI Punjab won by three runs.
Kumar Sangakkara provided the only resistance with his 45 off 44 balls that steered Punjab to a below-par total of 119-8, which was the lowest winning score in the history of the IPL.
Duminy also struck with the ball as he removed the dangerous Yuvraj Singh for 10, but he couldn’t steer his team home after a top-order collapse. Mumbai’s dangerous opening pair of Sachin Tendulkar and Sanath Jayasuriya failed, to leave them reeling at 4-2 in the second over.
The Indians stuttered to 47-4 after 10 overs, requiring 73 off the remaining quota.
Although Duminy scored the slowest IPL half-century he looked as though he had matters under control, but wickets fell regularly at the other end. Needing 12 off the final over, the Proteas batsman went for glory but his slog-sweep was caught on the boundary.
