The Rajasthan Royals recovered from a 3-3 in pursuit of 142 to claim a three-wicket victory over the Deccan Chargers in Port Elizabeth.
Shane Warne’s men were in big trouble having lost three wickets in the first two overs but a wonderful innings by 22-year-old Abhishek Raut saw the Royals claim their third win of the 2009 IPL.
The Royals did well to restrict the Chargers to 141-5 off their 20 overs thanks largely to some tidy bowling from Yusuf Pathan and Shane Harwood in particular.
Rajasthan’s spin attack kept Deccan to under six runs an over from the first ten overs, but thanks to a 59-run partnership between the pair of Rohit Sharma and Tirumalsetti Suman the Chargers were able to post a defendable total.
When Fidel Edwards removed Graeme Smith off just the second ball of the Royals’ innings and Herschelle Gibbs ran out Swapnil Asnodkar the very next ball the 142 needed for victory seemed a long way off.
Gibbs was in the thick of things again removing Naman Ojha with a stunning catch, but some brilliant stroke play from Lee Carseldine kept the Royals in touching distance of the required run rate.
The Chargers struck three more times including the big wicket of Carseldine, who was sent packing by a dubious LBW decision which clearly looked to have come off his bat first. But even at six down the Royals were still in the contest particularly with the dangerous Pathan at the crease.
Deccan had their chances to win but some poor fielding at the death cost them and in the end it was left to Raut to see his side home after a cameo 24 off 14 ball from Pathan.
Deccan: 141-5 (20 overs)
Adam Gilchrist 39 Tirumalsetti Suman 41*, Shane Harwood 2-25.
Rajasthan: 142-7 (19.4 overs)
Lee Carseldine 39, Abhishek Raut 36*, RP Singh 2-18.
