Mahela Jayawardene’s 52* helped secure a six-wicket victory for the Kings XI Pujab over Kolkata in Port Elizabeth.
In a dramatic encounter, which went right down to the finally delivery, it was left to Irfan Pathan to hit the winning runs, but it was Jayawardene’s composed innings which set Punjab up for the victory and propelled them up to second on the points table.
Brad Hodge’s second half-century in two games took the Kolkata Knight Riders to an unexpected 153 off their 20 overs as they looked to secure just their second win of the tournament.
Despite their reputation, the Knight Riders’ openers took a long time to get going and at the halfway mark Kolkata were going at just over five runs an over.
Having picked his spots early on, Hodge (70*) finally decided to let loose throwing his bat at every delivery in the closing stages of the innings and 21 off the last over propelled them men in black and gold past the 150 mark.
Sadly for Shahrukh Khan’s men, Hodge’s heroics were ultimately in vain as the Knight Riders’ poor work in the field cost them dearly and Jayawardene was on hand to take advantage.
Kolkata 153-3 (20 overs)
Brad Hodge 70*, Sourav Ganguly 22, Piyush Chawla 2-27.
Punjab 154-4 (20 overs)
Simon Katich 34, Mahela Jayawardene 52*, Ishant Sharma 20-27.
