More Bok pain for Stormers

Andries Bekker and Brian Mujati are unlikely to recover in time for the Stormers’ match against the Force on Saturday.

The Stormers confirmed on Sunday that they have lost Springboks Schalk Burger and Conrad Jantjes for the remainder of the tournament, and it now seems Bekker (rib) and Mujati (concussion) will only be fit for the Stormers’ final outing against the Cheetahs next week.

Stormers assistant coach Gary Gold confirmed to the Cape Times that the Springbok duo were unlikely to front the Force.

Pieter Louw will replace Burger at openside flank. ‘Pieter is good on the floor for a tall guy. He is also similar in height to Schalk, so he is a lineout option and we won’t lose anything there,’ Gold said.

‘Pieter has also been in and out of teams for two to three years and now he gets a chance to start. Pieter will play in Schalk’s place. Luke Watson and Duane Vermeulen won’t have to change their roles.’

The Stormers were, however, boosted by the return of Gcobani Bobo, who could start at inside centre. Joe Pietersen also trained with the squad on Monday and is an option at fullback in Jantjes’ absence. Percy Montgomery, capped 102 times for the Springboks, is unlikely to be named in the match 22.

Luke Watson will captain the side.
