Griquas crowned champs
9 May 2009
Griquas bagged the R1 million prize on offer when they beat the Blue Bulls 28-19 in the Vodacom Cup final in Pretoria.
Flyhalf Riaan Viljoen was the star of the show scoring all his side’s points as Griquas, having dominated the match tactically claimed a deserved win.
The game was a typical final highlighted by errors and very little in the way of attractive rugby with all the points, including a try each, scored by the two flyhalves, Viljoen and Blue Bulls pivot Francois Brummer.
Wayne Julies’s yellow card for a high tackle cost the Blue Bulls nine points in just six minutes as Griquas took control of the game just before half-time.
A late try for Brummer made the scoreline a bit more respectable, but it couldn’t hide the fact that the Griquas were the superior team over the 80 minutes and rightfully claimed the trophy and the prize money.

This is good for our local game. Not having the big name franchises / provinces (can’t really tell much of a difference anymore, can we?) winning the final just makes things seem so much motre even, at least….
Have your say
