Blending brains and brawn

Heyneke Meyer believes a hybrid of tactical precision and mental strength will determine the victor when the Sharks meet the Bulls at King’s Park on Saturday.
Meyer coached the Bulls to the Super 14 championship in 2007 before narrowly missing selection for the Springboks coaching role in 2008. He then coached Premiership club Leicester Tigers before returning to South Africa to be with ailing family members. He is currently the CEO of Sports Max, a company that looks at the holistic development of elite athletes.
Meyer said he expected the game to be relatively conservative in nature and that it would be characterised by an emphasis on forward play and tactical kicking. He noted the Sharks’ prowess from broken field and stressed that the Bulls must starve their supply in this regard, or risk exposing themselves to dangerous counter-attacks.
‘I watched the Bulls play the Cheetahs [last Saturday] and knew that if they opened it up the Cheetahs would feed off their mistakes. That’s exactly what happened. They can’t afford to make the same errors against a very good side like the Sharks,’ Meyer told keo.co.za.
‘What they’ve done so far has made them successful. I’ve heard criticism of their percentage approach but they’re top of the log with a chance of hosting a semi-final. They must have been doing something right.
‘The Sharks are an accomplished unit who are very difficult to beat in Durban. In the 2007 final they pinned us in our half through the boots of Percy Montgomery, Ruan Pienaar and Frans Steyn. The Bulls can’t allow them to dictate the field position like that because once they get on a roll they’re very hard to stop.’
Meyer said the return from suspension of Rory Kockott would add a skilled tactical kicker to their arsenal and added that the Bulls’ capacity to match them in this facet of play would hinge heavily on the availability of Fourie du Preez. The incumbent Springbok No 9 injured his calf muscle a fortnight ago and is uncertain of being fit for the match.
‘Not taking anything away from Heini Adams and Francois Hougaard, who are good scrumhalves in their own right, it’ll be a massive boast if Fourie was available, especially considering the [tactical] pattern the game is likely to follow,’ Meyer said.
‘He is the best tactical kicking scrumhalf in world rugby, and if you review the Bulls’ season you’ll note that many of their tries have come from box kicks Fourie has put up. He can put the ball on a dime and weights it so perfectly that he gives his wingers enough time to contest the ball. This puts a massive amount of pressure on the opposition. He’ll be a key player if he is fit.’
Meyer did, however, explain that given how closely the teams are matched, technical and tactical superiority would not be the sole determinant of the winners. He said the ability to manage the pressure of the occasion and focus on the task at hand without being influenced by outside distractions – like qualification permutations – will be central to the success of either side.
In recent years the Bulls have often scrapped for a semi-final spot in the final stages of the tournament, the most notable of which came against the Reds in 2007, when they achieved the goal of having to beat the Queenslanders by a 72-point margin.
‘I won’t say it gives the Bulls an edge to have been in high pressure situations over the last couple of seasons, but they will know how to prepare and also have the benefit of knowing that they have beaten the Sharks at King’s Park in a high pressure match [the final in 2007],’ Meyer said.
‘But ultimately what happened before is fairly inconsequential. The Sharks will be determined to beat their great rivals irrespective of whether they are knocked out of the tournament by kick-off or not. You have to remember there is plenty of pride at stake, but more than that, the players will be wanting to make an impression on the Springbok selectors. That’s a huge motivating factor in itself.’
Meyer continued, saying it was imperative that the coaches of both sides have a clear idea of how they want to play and that they communicate that effectively to the players.
‘You have to control the controllables,’ he said. ‘Neither team can afford to wait until Saturday afternoon to decide how they should approach the match because of whatever scenarios the preceding games would have throw up.
‘They coaches should have a clear idea of how they want to play and that should have been drilled into the players from the Monday morning practice already. Players need clear messages so that they can prepare adequately. It’s crucial that both coaches detail exactly how they intend to play from the outset.
‘The Bulls must set themselves to win first and foremost, then focus on getting the bonus point,’ he added.
‘The Sharks will know what’s required by the time the match begins and they’ll probably need five points to book a place in the semis if other results go their way.
‘It’s set up to be one of the best South African derbies in years.’

Bulls have more brawn than brains. Anyone with a brain knows that.
Since the “vote of no confidence against Jake White” the Bulls union is not my favourate at all – it is with great diificulty that I will support the Brawn Bull Supermodels (Matfield, Olivier and co) for the Super 14 final. But can assure you I wont shed a tear when they loose. For the sake of showing John O Neil the finger it is important for SA to win the trophy….

i’m not hesitating because of poor journalism (which i sometimes accuse you of) or because here isnt anything happing,
but
because there are stuff happening (and being said) on this site that should not be allowed!!
i, for one, am fedup with this situation … i come on here because i love rugby, love to discuss it and just love learning more about this game. i come here because i love dscussing rugby with guys like tighthead, pissant etc who seem to know a lot about the game and also love to share their point of view. then theres guyus like chch, wallabie etc who give us an insight of how the nz/aus rugby public is seeing things. i seriously doubt whether the mentioned guys will keep on returning to this site if stuff like yesterday keep on rearing its ugly head here.
i would suggest banning anyone who steps over racial and religious lines for an hour or two. yes, it might seem like nothing, but i can assure you if you banned the guys who start the stuff for an hour or two, sanity wouldve returned to the site by the time the returned.
and
if they should come back guns blazing, just repeat the process again (or make the banning a few hours longer)!!
i can assure you,
1. they will get fedup with not being able to post comments
2. you will not lose a lot of bloggers for days because of bannings

If the Sharks weren’t such mental powderpuffs this year it would be 50/50. The Sharks’ fragile mental state and the Bulls’ ambition to finish top of the log makes this one 70/30 to the Bulls.

I hope the Sharks are still in contention tomorrow. Then they will play expansively to try and get 5 points and the Bulls can simply play their normal game and feed off the Sharks’ mistakes. Most likely both teams will then score 4 tries and as long as the Bulls win by 1 point, they will end top of the log.
If the Sharks are out, and simply playing for a win, it will be a tst match type game, with the Bulls probably not getting 4 tries, and thus ending up 2nd on the log, even if they win.

im not even going into what happened yesterday….
Lets be honest guys, as much as id love to see them in the semis, the sharks are not going to make it.. I hope the bulls get the win and stay top of the log, because no one in world rugby is going to come to loftus in a semi final or final and beat us.. excuse the arrogance, but the bulls have alot of experience now, and to finally get a semi and final at loftus is huge! Bulls will win their 2nd super 14!

Its Van Riebeek’s law: The best South African team will always have their chances of winning the Super 14 taken away by another South African team. Countless times the Stormers have been in contention for a semi only for a bottomfeeding cats side to take it away from them. This was illustrated by the cheetahs victory over the Sharks this year. Its a typical South African mentality.
I’m just praying this game doesn’t injure any more springboks. I would gladly exchange a S14 win for a whitewash of the British and Irish Lions.

Lilith…good morning. I abhor what happened yesterday….those guys should be ashamed of themselves for stooping to those levels….most of them probably have daughters, wives of there own and i would be appalled if my girlfriend, daughter or mother was subjected to that….there is simply no excuses.
Now please understand that you need to be less militant and confrontational in your approach. Your intentions are noble…i too hate and despise racism and bullying in any guise or form. To change people one needs to understand them, it is far easier to change a friends opinion than an enemies opinion.
You know i believe you are a highly intelligent and decent lady, i would be proud to call you my friend. I am concerned at your methods of converting people….you will sway people with your warmth and strength of character…not by climbing into the gutter. I really am concerned about you…. what happened yesterday is exactly what you should be fighting…you promoted polarisation and reconciliation went out the window.
Ed was really embarressed and apologised unconditionally for what he said….i and a lot of others accept the apology for what was a moment of stupidity….

I wish we had a psychologist available to give us some insight into the warped personality type we are dealing with, but even as a layman I can see that we are talking about some serious psychological deviations here.

I was disappointed in Superrugby last night. They spent so much time on the bottom SA teams. All non-contenders. Hardly any excitement about the Bulls topping the log, and the prospects of SA hosted semifinals and finals.
In contrast there was lots of praise for the Lions and Stormers victories, and for the way in which the Cheetahs performed.
Really now. I liked the suggestion of one caller, who proposed a system similar to golf, where you have to make the cut at the halfway mark, and the bottom 5 teams then get kicked out of the competition. That way, you don’t get teams losing all year round, only to give 110% to topple a semifinal contender in the final rounds of the tournament.

Theyve picked forwards that can contest the lineouts, attack the rucks and defend any mauls quite adequately in order to secure possession. If they can starve our backs of possession we will not be able to breach their defences. We need to play loose forwards that can get us accross the gain line which is why I prefer Danie Rossouw. Heinrich will only be good if the Lions are spreading the ball and we need to contest it at the tackle area. That is not going to happen, believe me.

Last friday, Ed says Earl Rose is a h0tn0t, Lukeisbaas takes offense, and the bloggers attack Lukeisbaas for comments made on farmers, never addressing the initial racial slur, in fact defending it.
I blog yesterday saying everyone who defended that slur are racists, and they were all Pietman and GBS’ Jan friends. I attack with vigour, their racism, and in return I am sexually attacked on the blog, and today bloggers say I deserved it all. I asked for it.
There is nothing fair about Keo. It is predominantly supported by, “white” bloggers and some of them, not all, will defend the indefensible, and reach for their double standards as soon as that very thing they were happy to defend, gets done to them in return.
It is amazing!!!! Yesterday Sheriff actually told me that he understands why some white people are racist.
THEY CANNOT HELP THEMSELVES. IT WAS INBRED OVER YEARS. I, AS LILITH MUST ACCEPT THE RACIAL ABUSE AND BE QUIET, AS I AM ONLY PROVOCKING THE RACISM MORE.
I really think some research has to be done on how their brains can have perfect logic one day and assess right from wrong, but the moment race is introduced the logic is inverted.

I also really, well hardly ever go back and read the posts that were posted the previous day or night. So have no idea what he said.

I have no idea why, I just said to him not to talk like he was to the other bloggers as we were only just talking about rugby and just try and be a nicer person. Brussouws tackle count is the highest in the comp.
of course, it could be because the cheetahs often do more defending in the course of a game.
However, on attack, he has been pretty good, making many yards and getting over the advantage line.

Brussow and steggmann a real handfull at 6…for the 1 st time we have our own Waugh,macaw, g smith types…we did have that in 2006 with luke but jake never embraced that….i feel at home we must play our game….not choose a team to negate the B Lions but a team to perform to our game plan…on the hard fields rossouw not the answer as a loosie…lets take the battle to them…not the other way around…

It is about the combination and game plan
6. Brussouw / Watson / burger
7. smith / Vermeulen / Burger
8. spies / Kankowski
We need to utilise the pace and speed of spies in open play, and it is for this reason, amongst others (captaincy and positional experience) that I would play john smit at 2.
We play a “real” tight 5, allowing the loose forwards more freedom.

You will see a lot of kicking for territory from them and dont be surprised about drop goals. They have picked their flyhalves exactly for that. We have to keep their forwards going backwards therefore we need players who can play around the fringes of the rucks. I would go with Juan, Deysel/Luke and Danie to be honest. I like Heinrich but think he will be exposed against the Lions.

#199 grant10: I agree 100% with you on this point. There seems to be too much respect for the Lions. They def deserve respect but not this much. In 90% of the positions having all our players fit we are beeter than them. Why select players to combat theirs if ours are better anyway.
Regarding the loose trio I think Div will stick with Burger, Smith and Spies. Luke’s stats are very good this season especially if you consider that this “small” No. 8 played behind a losing pack, he has been brilliant.

How disapointing was this weekends rugby from a shark perspective? I still think the Sharks is the best team in SA, but they have been underperforming of late.

#218 Snoek: Ag, that was such a let down really. We should have won that game. A few times we should have had that game. If Bissie passed and JPP at one stage both would have been tries. Also they got a lineout that actually was ours that turned into a try for them. Then Stefan that is always solid. Trying to kick that ball on our line instead of just diving over it. We should have won. Thats how the Shark season has gone all S14.
Will still support Sharks this weekend but we wont got through even if we win. Would mean the Chiefs to beat Brumbies, Blues to beat Saders, Lions to beat Tahs. Cant see all that happen. So after Saturday will put my support behind the Bulls to win. If we beat them they will have to travel. Still will support them. Then if by any miracle we make it then of course will support the Sharks.
Only good thing is after this Saturday the players will get a rest before going into training for the Lions tour.

I read what Tighthead said about Guthro’s FAULTY scrumming technique a couple of weeks ago (head right on the side of the opposing tight head)…
Then I had the pleasure to talk to a recent LooseHead Springbok prop, yesterday…. I asked him about that…
He said that you can be bloody sure Guthro’s right shoulder is doing serious damage on the opposing Tight Head’s chest… he said, watch, after each scrum, the opposing tight head is slow to join a next movement, and gives due attention to a sore chest…
Interesting… indeed…
So, I guess, whilst being a bit unorthodox, Guthro hurts an opposing Tight Head….
There are soooo many intricacies in the front row, it’s scary.
He also said, unless scrumming right in towards the hookers, a tight head prop will battle to let a scrum fall (downwards)
The Refs should learn about scumming from the best of the best, the players who played there….

Yes it is true that his right shoulder can hurt the tight head, but that is at the expense of breaking up his own scrum so that there is no tight bind between him and his hooker and therefore no tight bind between him and his lock.
So in order to hurt the tight head he has destroyed his own scrum!!
Secondly it is in the natural mechanics of a scrum that a tight head exerts downward pressure.
That is part of his job.
It is the loose heads job to try and hold him up.
Further, good tight heads will split the opposing loose head and hooker while applying downward pressure.
In the case of Guthro they don’t have to worry about splitting the loose head from his hooker as Guthro does that for them!!

#255 grant10: I played all 3 positions in the front row in Primary School…. skinny as a rake, but my Dad, who played Freestate Hooker in his time taught me a few tricks of the trade…. and boy it worked.
In High School, I switched to Flank…. my preferred position on the Openside, but in High School days we still played left and right flank, not Openside and Blindside… never amounted to much in School because I was small until Matrick when I started growing seriously.
At Club Level, I always played Openside Flank.

Only thing hampering Spies is his hands at the back of the scrum but seems to have improved.

On the other hand, I feel those who do want to carry on a political argument should stick to that relevant thread….and not let it contimate other threads where a rugby discussion is taking place.
But what i cant understand is the thread with the biggest hits are the political ones, where large swathes of these so-called rugby-only posters devote considerable time and energy in saying how much they despise all these political troublemakers.
Why? Simply scroll on or go to another thread. The truth is there are very few rugby related posts. I wish there were more.

yeah its not so much of activism so much as letting ppl have their say. SA is a country full of issues, that is what happens after 300 years of racial oppression. This is a very balanced view; thank you for taking the time to write those thoughts.
Lilith/hater should actually not blog on keo. I think she is not mature enough to handle the diversity of a blog of this nature.
We know that SA is filled with people who have serious racial issues. They deny it, but it is fact. Lilith is the fire that exposes that filth, but it is a fire that does not belong here. This is a rugby site.
She is drawn to this site exactly because of the presence of white Afrikaner males. She wants to fight with them and no better place to do it here.
But if we are brave then we need to say that rugby is what most Afrikaners love, not like, but love. It’s in their blood, like soccer for many others worldwide. It is then not surprising that Afrik will want to blog here.
In a sick way she wants to “metaphorically abused” hence the constant references to it. Go and track it. She keeps going back to it.
As a person of colour or “cullert” I take extraordinary steps to confront people who are part of this group to progress in their thinking. For this I have been called many things, but that is ok.
The day when people confront their “own” will be the day when we move forward.
The challenge to all of us to to evolve beyond our ethnicity and become people of PRINCIPLE. You take a view based on a principle not because indian/white/cullert/black guy said it.
So first the principle then the LOYALTY.

They were in a hurry to get to the Ball but decided that as their curiosity would kill them otherwise, O’Neill would stop the car while Mitchell dashed in to speak to the proprietor.
As O’Neill kept his pink Mini Clubman idling in the parking area, John Mitchell ran inside where he found Bruce O’Banion enjoying a quiet beer while watching his personal copy of Muriel’s Wedding.
“Tell me mate,” asked Mitchell, “What is a taxidermist?”
“I stuff animals,” replied the taxidermist without diverting his gaze from the old television set.
Mitchell nodded his head in acknowledgement and returned to the car where he and O’Neill sped off towards the party in silence.
“So,” said John O’Neill bursting with curiosity, “What’s a taxidermist?”

The Keo moderator cannot see anything wrong when these comments are repeatedly made, and wonders why its hard to blog rugga when you are persistently being insulted and discriminated against.
Their answer ofcourse is to scroll on and don;t read how racist they are being. The final alternative is when they say, like Sheriff there. Rugby belongs to Afrikaner white men, and Soccer belongs to black people and they tell you, a rugga lover, to leave their site alone, where they can abuse you as much as they would like, in peace.

for *** sakes, i blog here to chat, have a laugh and yes, sometimes i like a good discussion about things relevant to my situation as a south african living in a society seemingly in permanent transition…or transformation.
i had a long and rather irritating conversation this morning with a croatian who has lived here for many years. he feels that there is no such thing as a south african “nation” but rather a citizenry comprised of many nations eg zulu, xhosa, afrikaans etc etc.
i disagreed and argued that “strength in diversity” characterised us as a people, that i knew no other home, that my indian mates have more in common with me culturally than the scottish ancestors in my family tree.
i still believe that to be true but think that it is maybe not such a general view, in fact it may be a minority view. all i can say is that the black and white needs to be removed from this conversation as it clouds everything with irrational emotions. rather discuss the treatment of fellow human beings. after all, i may be white outside, but no-one, NO-ONE knows anything about my thoughts unless i choose to let them. by the same token i dont profess to know the thoughts of others or the circumstances that determine their way of thinking.
i can only ask, in a mature manner, for someone to explain their thinking and then choose to agree or disagree. this is not a forum for venting my spleen, unless its rugby related of course.
and that fukking croatian knows fokkol about rugby.

It’s hard to “understand” where someone is coming from if all they seek to do is attack and antagonise. This is not the way of reconciliation and mutual understanding.
It is safe to say that these outbursts on Keo and they way they are dealt with are not a globular SA issue (I have found that most people in SA have a strong desire to move on and share the same country in harmony). This situation stems from Hater’s emotional intelligence being inadequate to resolve and discuss issues in a pleasant and decent and/or appropriate way, without alienating the 99% of bloggers who are undeserving of her generalisations and racial prejudices.
Hater’s vitriol serves no purpose other than to stoke the fire and fuel the flames (something which I sadly suspect is what motivates Hater deep down).
In saying this, some of the comments Hater has reacted to have been outrageously inappropriate and offensive. If Hater is to be disciplined, then there others that are equally deserving of the same treatment.

The game this weekend will undoubtedly be tight. I believe that the Sharks hold the upper hand in the frontrow where the Bulls have a distinct lack of depth off the bench. Both teams have a good lock pairing but the Bulls edge it here based on experience (though Bakkies did look rather rusty). The loose forwards is where I believe the battle will be decided. At long last we have the match up we have been discussing with differing views, namely Kankowski vs. Spies. It will be hard to judge their performances as they do not go head-to-head (Kankowski always seems to find himself on the wing). Deysel will need to be nullified as he is very effective with his storming runs through teh mid-field or around the base of the ruck. As for scavenging the Bulls hold the edge in Stegman and Potgieter
In the backline I believe that the Bulls hold the edge for positions 9-12 while the Ndungane brothers cancel each other out. Habana and JP will provide and interesting tussle and I call it all square in that regard. Fullbacks will give us the opportunity to pitch both possible Bok fullbacks against each other. My money was originally on Stefan (due to his dependability) but after his brain **** last weekend Kirchner takes the honours by a head. My prediction: Bulls win but with no bonus point.

Go back through all the articles posted, especially anything about the Bulls and you will find Hater/Lilith going out of its way to provoke other bloggers.
On the Bakkies thread of 4 May for instance it gleefully called Pietman and Sherrif child ponographers with it’s very good friends Dawn and Transformation in tow. Even went as far as to say that Sherrif was masturbating Pietman to child pronography. This is just one example. She has countless times made racist and derogatory remarks about Afrikaners, Bulls supporters and white males in general.
Now he/she/it wants to come with it’s holier than thou attiude and shout foul. Just because of the perceived injustice at being verbally raped. As long as the shoe was on the other foot it was fine.
Others will eventually fight back viciously. I have made derogatory remarks and will do so again if provoked in a similar manner.

Ok, I’ve had enough of this.
Go back through all the articles posted, especially anything about the Bulls and you will find Hater/Lilith going out of its way to provoke other bloggers.
On the Bakkies thread of 4 May for instance it gleefully called Pietman and Sherrif child ponographers with it’s very good friends Dawn and Transformation in tow. Even went as far as to say that Sherrif was m@sturbating Pietman to child pronography. This is just one example. She has countless times made racist and derogatory remarks about Afrikaners, Bulls supporters and white males in general.
Now he/she/it wants to come with it’s holier than thou attiude and shout foul. Just because of the perceived injustice at being verbally raped. As long as the shoe was on the other foot it was fine.
Others will eventually fight back viciously. I have made derogatory remarks and will do so again if provoked in a similar manner.

Actually Ranger, Severus is correct. The talk on RH is rugby. None of this BS and no there are Kiwis, Aussies, the odd Brit and Saffa. EVERY post is moderated by the Editor and if he thinks a comment is warranted he does so. The site is not fast paced and neither are the answers. It can get heated with the ‘across the ditch flexing’ but all in all tame, well rounded comments. As far as the underdog goes., like to see them do well and if good enough they get the rewards.
Union is in my families blood. Father, brother and husband all played union and league. This was common practice years ago and hope shall return. My husband coached juniors up to and including colts for many years. My sons are union as well, through and through, though watch league games here and there.
ET Andrew Ettinghausen ( Hell of a good looker ) I’ve never thought about it before. If Gaz can convert why not ET. Gaz isn’t half as good at league as Reg was.
As far as league backs go I would have thought Michael Cronin would have done well.

yip think the ladies liked ET, but the oke i know supported crunolla sharks and i got to see a video of ET’s best moves/tries. think he would’ve made a superb centre.
dont know if its the league influence or just the game u guys play in terms of shifting the ball skilffuly, but ella and dwyer pretty much revolutionised taking it flat. the other area u guys appear to be coming more right is in the scrum, which is not the traditional strength of the oz game, benn robinson at NSW is doing a great job, the ozzies are clever and have really applied themselves to finding the best scrum techniques and packing strategies. i have no idea what they trying to do half the time, but there’s method there.

I don’t have a season ticket because of all the going back and forward from Umhlanga and Joburg. From next year hope to just be in Umhlanga all the time. Will get a season ticket then.
This is one game that I really wish I was going too. Nothing better than watching a Bulls and Sharks game. Also all the supporters mix so well together its like a festival after.

Still would have been great to go and watch. Next year going to go to most of the games if I get a season ticket. My mate has a ticket for the parking right in the field next to the stadium. You wait years to get that. Thats where all the braais take place and its a awesome atmostphere. I will just go with them once I get a ticket at least we can all just walk back to the car and braai.

I normally only read and post now and then a comment, but the last few days was really the worst I have seen on this site since I logged on about 3 years ago. Racist comments, gutter language, you name it. And it doesn’t stop.
Come on, Roy, take some action. Ban those that need to be banned. white and black.
