The Kings XI Punjab smashed the Dehli Daredevils by six wickets in Bloemfontein to keep their slim hopes of making the semi-finals alive.
Dehli were pinned back by the bowling of Brett Lee and Sree Sreenath, who picked up 3/15 and 2/22 respectively to limit the high flyers to a below par 120.
Delhi’s top four have been consistent to date, but they contributed just 38 runs between them, and left a massive repair job for their middle order after slumping to 51/4.
Dinesh Karthik (32) and Mithun Manhas (26) shared a 50-run partnership to stabilise the innings, but failed to launch in the closing overs and left Yuvraj’s Singh’s charges feeling confident of grabbing a crucial win.
But the chase proved more complicated than originally expected, and Punjab were reeling at 35/3 at one stage – Simon Katich, Luke Pomerbach and Sunny Sohal all falling cheaply.
However, Singh and Kumar Sangakkara, who played watchfully at first before cracking on, and later the Sri Lankan and Irfan Pathan, who blasted 21 off 11 deliveries to ease the pressure on his side in the death overs, sealed the result.
Dehli 120 - Dinesh Karthik 32, Mithun Manhas 26, Brett Lee 3/15, Sree Sreenath 2/22
Punjab 123/4 - Kumar Sangakkara 43*, Irfan Pathan 21*
